Zum Silbersack — Restaurant in Hamburg

We were at this bar two times during a Hamburg weekend. Both experiences were great. The first time we went in and had two shots of jägermeister. The vibe was happy semi chaotic. An old man was reading a paper in a corner. There was broken glass and beer all over the floor. A 30 something woman was singing loudly and dancing around the place. A group of rowdy men drank beer in a booth and the jukebox was delivering classical German tunes.

The other visit we were heading for Nordlicht but it was closed. This Sunday the vibe was more chill. An old couple drank beers in silence. People drank shots at the bar. We ordered two Astra and headed for the jukebox. 2€ got us twelve songs: Freddy Quinn, Elvis Presley, toto and more. We got a corner table and drank 30 Astra’s. I remember going to the toilet and being impressed that they had ashtrays at the urinal. Someone had also puked all over the urinal and the toilet but I’m not pointing any fingers.

Legenden sterben nicht?! Der Silbersack schon.

Ich kenne den Silbersack seit meinem ersten Hamburg-Besuch in den 90er Jahren. Damals war es noch ein ECHTES Kiezlokal, bei dem man sich als Tourist etwas deplatziert vorkam, aber trotzdem akzeptiert wurde, von der Wirtin Erna Thomsen und dem einheimischen Stammpublikum. Nach dem Tod von Erna Thomsen im Jahr 2012 wurde der Silbersack von einer Gruppe Hamburger Pfeffersäcke gekauft, um weitergeführt zu werden. Das hätte man besser bleiben lassen. Mittlerweile dient das Lokal als offizielle Touristenattraktion, von offiziellen Tourguides werden Gruppen jeglicher Art hier durchgeschleust, von schwäbischen Hausfrauen bis zu bayrischen Abiturientenklassen. Alle wissen eigentlich nicht, was sie hier wollen und können auch mit dem Flair nichts anfangen. Dass der Silbersack eine Raucherkneipe ist, hat nichts mit einem Alleinstellungsmerkmal zu tun, das ist mittlerweile so gut wie jede Kneipe auf dem Kiez, dem ach so liberalen Hamburg sei Dank.

Umfangreiche Antifa-Werbung per Aufkleber hinterlässt auch einen faden Beigeschmack.

A very different experience but worth a visit. Be prepared if visiting Hamburg from areas that have smoking bans in pubs. It was like a blast back to the 90s for me as the air was filled with smoke but it did add an old school feel. The pub was packed and the atmosphere was good. A lively spot in an...
