The Old Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg is one of those attractions that truly surprises you — not least because it’s completely free, yet feels like stepping straight into a piece of living history. Opened in 1911, it’s a remarkable feat of engineering and architecture that still functions perfectly today. As you enter the building near Landungsbrücken, you’re immediately struck by its historic charm. The beautiful tiling, solid metal pillars, and the massive elevators — once used to carry horse-drawn carriages and vehicles — all stand as proud reminders of early 20th-century craftsmanship. You can either take one of these impressive elevators down or descend via the staircases, which adds to the experience as you move from daylight into the cool, slightly damp air beneath the river. Walking or cycling through the tunnel itself is fascinating. The long, arched passage, lined with white tiles and lit by old-fashioned lamps, stretches underneath the Elbe, giving you a sense of both nostalgia and wonder. Along the walls, you can spot small, decorative details depicting fish, crabs, and maritime motifs — all beautifully crafted and perfectly preserved. When you emerge on the other side, you’re rewarded with a stunning view back toward Hamburg’s skyline. From there, you can admire the harbor, the massive cranes, and the impressive silhouette of the Elbphilharmonie in the distance — a breathtaking contrast between Hamburg’s industrial past and modern elegance. The Old Elbe Tunnel is far more than a functional passageway; it’s a piece of living cultural heritage, a journey through time, and a reminder of what humans can achieve with vision and craftsmanship. The fact that it’s completely free only makes it more remarkable. A truly unique and memorable experience — an absolute must-see when...

The Alter Elbtunnel is nothing short of a hidden gem in Hamburg! My recent visit left me absolutely mesmerized by the unique experience it offers. Walking through this historic tunnel felt like stepping back in time, yet with a touch of modern charm.

The engineering marvel of the tunnel is awe-inspiring. The intricate tilework and beautifully crafted arches create a captivating atmosphere. The tunnel's historic significance is palpable, and you can almost feel the stories embedded in its brick walls.

What truly sets the Alter Elbtunnel apart is the stunning view of the Elbe River. As you stroll beneath the riverbed, the expansive views of the water and the cityscape are breathtaking. It's a photographer's dream come true, and every corner seems to offer a picturesque frame.

The maintenance and cleanliness of the tunnel are commendable. I appreciated the well-lit pathways, ensuring a safe and enjoyable walk. The informative plaques along the way provided interesting insights into the history and purpose of the tunnel, adding an educational aspect to the visit.

Whether you're a history enthusiast, architecture lover, or simply looking for a unique experience in Hamburg, the Alter Elbtunnel is a must-visit. It's an enchanting blend of the past and present, offering a memorable journey beneath the bustling city. Kudos to the preservation efforts and the city for keeping this cultural...

A historic engineering masterpiece and unique Hamburg experience!

We visited the Alter Elbtunnel on 6 June, and it was one of the highlights of our trip to Hamburg. Opened in 1911, this tunnel is not just a passage under the Elbe but a true piece of history and engineering brilliance.

From the start, the entrance itself is fascinating with detailed information boards explaining the history and construction. The old lifts that take you down to the tunnel give you a glimpse into how people and even vehicles were once transported. Walking through the tunnel is an experience in itself. The tiled walls, lighting, and the long stretch beneath the river create a special atmosphere.

Along the way, you also find information and small artworks that make the walk more engaging. Standing in the middle of the tunnel and realizing you’re under the Elbe River is quite surreal!

What we loved most was how well-preserved everything is, and how it still carries the charm of the early 20th century. It’s free to visit, easy to access from St. Pauli, and gives you not only a piece of Hamburg’s history but also great views once you reach the other side.

Definitely a must-visit in Hamburg for history lovers, architecture fans, or simply anyone looking for a unique...
