I have stayed in multiple A&O hostels across the country and most of them have been nice, but this one was unfortunately the worst of all. To begin with, my friend and I arrived early in the morning and had to wait several hours before the check in. During the time that we spent in the lobby we have been approached by multiple shady looking people, I wasn’t sure if they were hostel guests or simply homeless people looking for a place to sit inside. One of them offered us *, which was completely out of place. Since the hostel is located on Reeperbahn (area known for questionable nighttime activities) I suppose they should have more security to protect actual guests from such unwanted interactions in the lobby/outer area and not let shady people use the hostel’s facilities (like bathrooms etc) for free. When we got to the room, our first impression was that it was EXTREMELY small for an 8-person room: 3 beds were crammed up against one another (imagine a П shape), which meant one person’s head would be like 50cm away from another person’s head, and the same for one’s head and other’s feet. I understand a hostel is a shared space but this is a bit too much for lack of personal space. The room didn’t have lockers: or, in fact, any kind of box/shelf to put your stuff in. There was only a locker downstairs that costs €6 for 24 hours or the staff could take your valuables to their office for free: still, that’s very inconvenient, normally all other A&Os had either a box or at least an under-bed space that you could use and lock. The toilet in this room was also broken, the water was constantly flowing and this disrupted my sleep even further along with some unpleasant loud guests (which is not the hostel’s fault but just to mention). The room also didn’t have enough light and felt generally unpleasant. To sum it up, this was a very unpleasant stay. If you are in Hamburg, A&O Hauptbahnhof is much...
Read moreWe booked our stay at A&O Reeperbahn through CTSReisen from 08/10/2024 to 11/10/2024, for our school trip, and I’d like to share our experience.
Firstly, I want to commend the staff for their professionalism. They remained helpful and accommodating, even though they seemed overwhelmed by so much work and workarounds. However, we did have an issue where the cleaning staff inadvertently took some personal items from our group, specifically a few Pfandflaschen. While their intent may have been to tidy up, a better approach might be a reward system for their good service.
Unfortunately, we faced several serious issues that were not accurately represented in our booking. We experienced significant security concerns when an intruder approached some of our female students - mostly minors. Additionally, some rooms were under construction, and the hostel was overbooked, according to the managers - likely due to miscommunication between your teams.
The cleanliness of the rooms was alarming. We found broken toilet seats and disturbing patches of black mold and fungus in the bathrooms—some were large enough to resemble modern art! A thorough deep and specialist cleaning is urgently needed.
Considering these severe issues, we believe a partial refund would have been a fair gesture of goodwill.
Furthermore, the recommended location raised significant concerns. Being situated in a red-light district was not adequately disclosed, and our 15- and 16-year-olds were frequently approached by individuals from the red-light industry, which posed serious safety risks. It would be wise to reconsider housing minors in this environment.
On a positive note, the kitchen facilities were a highlight. The food was fresh, and the breakfast area was enjoyable, although some tables could use leveling. The variety offered was excellent, and the staff's attentiveness was...
Read moreReally disturbing woman in our room that decided to inform everybody that she will sleep naked tonight but is too tired to masturbate. A man who snored extremely loud the whole night, I guess he was drunk. Not really a problem of the hostel, but somehow maybe of the location? I slept in quite some dorms, but this one was by far the craziest. It didn't help that there was extremely loud music the entire night, either in the hostel or coming from the neighbors. I really love bass - but not 24hrs! In front of the hostel/our room there were very loud groups till 2 O' clock, lots of alcohol which I didn't expect on a Thursday night and quite some aggression in their voices.||||I have been on different continents and traveled on a budget a lot, but the place they offered us to store our luggage (our room itself didn't have any lockers) was the worst I have ever seen: a totally broken window, lots of beer bottles and food leftovers, luggage that looked like it has been there since years ... We didn't leave our luggage there, it didn't feel safe at all.||||In our room: the window was broken, toilet didn't flush properly, water in the sink was standing, no lights at the beds and nearly no sockets. It was quite dirty and the beds were really squeaky.||||There was just one thing that stood against all these hideous experiences: the friendliness of the stuff. Every single person was nice, friendly and helpful - they try to make this hellhole a better place, aim to make it a excellent hostel - I Imagine they will succeed - but I myself won't try again, not at Hamburg...
