Bäckerei Höflinger — Restaurant in Munich

The coffee was good, but the customer service was a bit impatient. English is my first language, I’m learning German. I managed to get through most of the interaction pretty well until she asked a question about the size. She asked it a couple of times and I apologised in German and told her I only understood a bit of German, and in English she shouted the question at me. I apologised in English and answered. After that she softened a bit, so I think she realised she was being a bit hard on me. Sadly this is my experience in a lot of places. Germany is sometimes unforgiving on those trying to learn the language. If you are not answering the questions at a reasonable speed, expect to be spoken down to. I’m sure if I’d just done the whole transaction in English they would’ve been getting a better...

Worst experience I've had in a very long time.... I come in to order a tea and I am not from Germany or speak German. I tell this to a older lady in the front: she understand and tries to help. But behind her was a blond hair lady giving my girlfriend and me such a disgusting look. First I know Germans like to stare at people but this felt a bit different... My girlfriend and I shrug it off at first and countune to order; still the blonde lady looks at us with such a nasty look. My order comes out and the blond hair lady goes to the back, and brings out a coworker. They both proceeded to look with such a disgusting faces at me and my gf and I. If you're someone looking to spend their hard earned money...

Ich bestellte einen Kaffee und arbeitete in aller Ruhe an meinem Laptop, wurde aber unerwartet gebeten zu gehen, falls noch mehr Kunden kämen. Als Asian fühlte ich mich ungerechterweise ausgegrenzt, vor allem, weil dort andere deutsche Kunden waren, die ungestört an ihren Laptops arbeiteten. Der Raum war nicht überfüllt und die Leute in der Nähe bemerkten die Interaktion und sprachen sogar in meiner Verteidigung. Der Ton, der mir gegenüber angeschlagen wurde, war unangenehm und die Erfahrung kam diskriminierend und offen gesagt rassistisch rüber!

Diese Beschwerde wurde formell bei der Antidiskriminierungsstelle des Bundes eingereicht.

I ordered a coffee and was quietly working on my laptop, but I was unexpectedly asked to leave if more customers arrived. As an Asian person, I felt unfairly singled out, especially since there were other german customers, working on their laptops undisturbed. The space wasn’t crowded, and people nearby noticed the interaction, even speaking up on my behalf. The tone used with me felt uncomfortable, and the experience came across as discriminatory and frankly racist!

This complaint has been formally submitted to Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency.

Trotz der Einreichung einer formellen Beschwerde und dem Versand der Briefe an das Café und die Hauptgeschäftsstelle wurde meine Forderung nach einer formellen Entschuldigung und Anerkennung der diskriminierenden Behandlung ignoriert. Dies ist besonders enttäuschend, da ich Zeugenaussagen anderer Kunden beigefügt habe, die ähnliche Missstände erlebt haben. Ein solches Schweigen und die fehlende Übernahme von Verantwortung sind äußerst ernüchternd.
