What a sweet surprise!
I spent a lovely afternoon at IceDate in Munich with my sister, brother-in-law, and a friend — and what a refreshing and unexpected experience it was. I enjoy ice cream, but I’ve never been a super fan… until now. This wasn’t just ice cream. This was something completely different.
IceDate offers a whole new kind of indulgence — free from added sugar, yet full of rich, deep flavors. I was genuinely surprised by how vibrant and true the fruit flavors were. One of the highlights for me was the turmeric-infused flavor (Kurkuma!), which brought a warm, earthy note I wasn’t expecting. And the espresso-coffee, Affogato, combination with ice cream? Incredible. It didn’t dry out my mouth like sugary desserts often do — it felt natural and kind to my body. There’s a phrase on the wall: “From a date to a love affair.” It perfectly describes how I felt — this wasn’t just a snack, it was a love story for the senses. Inside the shop, there’s also a cozy touch that spoke to me: the bookshelf filled with titles on psychology and personal growth. As someone who loves those topics, it made me feel like I shared something in common with the people behind the counter. You can feel that this place is built with care and thoughtfulness.
If there’s one small suggestion I’d make, it would be to soften the design a little — something warmer or more homey to match the heartfelt experience. A touch more coziness would really make the space as welcoming as the flavors. All in all, it's a truly special place. Thank you for the Überraschung — I’ll...
Read moreAs a vegan for quite some years I was so excited to try this when I moved to Munich. And let me say upfront that I’m not a picky eater. I have tried many vegan ice creams and usually I’m ok, even with the mediocre ones. But this is no ice cream, this tastes as if you’re eating ‘meal’, like you’re scooping heaps of sand into your mouth. I went back a second time, after a while, thinking I must be mistaken, seeing the amount of positive reviews. But nope, I actually had to toss the remainder (I HATE wasting food..), because I could simply not finish it. So awful. First time in my life that eating ice cream felt like punishment.
If I want a ‘healthy’ ice cream alternative, I can blend up a frozen banana with some cocoa powder, which tastes pretty great. Why would you serve people (poorly) blended dry cashews mush ‘sweetened’ with a few dates? It’s supposed to be a dessert, something to indulge in, not some superfood. Nowadays, there are so many great dairy ice cream alternatives, like B&J’s, iceDate is honestly doing the vegan community a disservice by having non-vegans believe that this is the best we can do.
If you want good vegan ice cream, go to something like Bartu and have one of the many great sorbet flavors, including an amazing dark chocolate one. I do hope they (and other reputable gelato parlors) will start offering more vegan ‘dairy’ gelato flavors in the future. Or that iceDate takes a hint and starts making ice cream that actually tastes good. But I’m not holding my hopes up on...
Read moreAs I'm not a vegan and typically don't eat vegan ice cream, I'm not sure how fair my rating can be. So I'll be generous.
If you're not vegan, it's NOT worth going here. The ice is comparatively really expensive and tastes rather bland and grainy. The nice thing about it, though, is that it melts really slowly. So that's a bonus I guess.
If you have vegan friends that drag you along, you'll probably survive. Although even then I honestly couldn't recommend buying anything here without a disclaimer. Of the three flavors I tried, I honestly would have tossed out one (if I didn't want to be polite), and the other two were merely edible or okay.
All that being said, my vegan friends seem to like this place, so it's probably pretty good. So 1 star from me, 4-5 from them (the true audience of this store), makes it a total of 4. If you're vegan, it's probably...
