I really enjoyed the Schnitzel vom Schwäbisch-Hällischen Landschwein~Slices of pork marinated with mustard and horseradish, fried to a golden, yet tender crisp, with a generous squeeze of lemon depending on how you like it. You will find a small pot of berries on the side and I do suggest you drop a few on each bite! Served with a side of potato radish salad, and let me warn you, if you are looking for something sweet, this aint it! The radish gives this salad a spicy bite, what you are used to as “German Potato Salad” isn’t this at all and how wonderful is that! A must is always the red cabbage that is simmered in spices yet remains firm to the fork, and has a slightly sweet finish.
This restaurant is famous for its potato dumplings, which I learned afterwards because I don’t usually do restaurant research until I get home and provide tips for readers. I go in with an empty stomach and an open mind ready to handle whatever is placed in front of me with enthusiasm! So if you aren’t a fan of vinegar based potato salad and you want to play it safe, order the potato dumplings instead.
You will find Schnitzel in many forms across Germany and surrounding European countries, try it with gravy, mushrooms, or rolled and fried with ham and cheese!
The service here was such a pleasant experience, we rolled up and saw two young black men managing the outside patio, turns out one spent lots of time in New York and also went to college in Nevada! Both born and raised in Germany, but were very happy to connect and share their own personal experiences of time in the states! Both provided a few suggestions about where to hang out during Oktoberfest, and claimed that their restaurant has a tent and consigned on having the best beer and food!
Sadly I neglected to write down their names, but nonetheless these gentlemen exceeded standards in service and kindness, even if you are not familiar with German cuisine, they will suggest something that you might enjoy based on your personal tastes. If you don’t enjoy the food, that is fine, but please keep that opinion to yourself if you can’t express those sentiments in a way that is not offensive.
This restaurant is a favorite among the locals, nestled in a residential neighborhood where patrons ride up on bicycles with babies on the back to eat dinner joined by their grandparents, so have some respect and conduct yourself with decorum. You will not see diners glued to their cell phones, talking loudly, or playing social media videos, while eating they are enjoying the company of others and you should be doing the same!

Read moreFrom the moment I set foot into the rustic embrace of Wirtshaus in der Au, I knew I was in for a treat. Tucked away in a charming Munich neighborhood, this authentic German restaurant has effortlessly combined the rich history of its setting with a warm, vibrant atmosphere that instantly makes you feel at home.
The sheer delight of the culinary journey at this place is hard to capture in words, but I will do my best. The food was simply sublime, mouthwatering, and each dish was an art piece carefully crafted with love and dedication. My companions and I found every meal to be exceptional and a testament to the authenticity and quality Wirtshaus in der Au prides itself on.
I took a vegetarian route and ordered the Knödeltrio. Imagine three large, gnocchi-like balls each graced with an entirely different yet equally delectable sauce: a rich marinara, a fragrant pesto, and an intricately spiced curry. This dish was so appetizing and filling that despite my longing, I had to skip dessert, but I was left with a craving to relive the experience.
An authentic German restaurant isn't complete without its beer, and Wirtshaus in der Au didn't disappoint. Their selection was impressive, but it's worth noting that the cocktails too were a joy to the palate. Whether you're a beer enthusiast or a cocktail lover, they've got you covered.
The service was outstanding, a harmonious blend of professionalism and friendliness, adding to the warm and inviting ambiance of the place.

Hospitality - 2/5 Selection - 3/5 Quality of Food - 3/5 Overall - 3.5/5
After getting settled in Munich, a local had told us about a place where we could enjoy a good traditional meal. Insert Wirtshaus in der Au. We were excited and had high hopes. Unfortunately, we were let down. As we entered, there was no hostess, nor did anyone take the time to let us know that someone would be right with us. Most of the staff just blew past us and went on to whatever they had to do. We were looked at like true foreigners.
After about 5 to 10 minutes, we were shown to a table. From there things really didn't get better. The waiter was kind and tried to make good of what happened about no one acknowledging us. However, nothing seem to go right. While we were waiting between corses, the phone was right next to our table and went off the whole time. Making the ambiance unpleasant.
The waiters overall beer suggestion was good, but that was the highlight of the meal. From there the food was just average and actually came out cold. As we had plans for after dinner, we chose to just make the best of it and get through the meal. The steak was tough and had no flavor. Move so came out rare and was more just raw. The Bergfex would have been great! It did have some good flavor, but it was cold and seemed to be sitting prior to getting to us.
Overall, we wouldn’t suggest Wirtshuas in de Au as we ended up finding much better places to enjoy a great...
