Fischrestaurant Oberdeck — Restaurant in Wismar

Left with a bitter taste of bad service despite the great food.

The food was genuinely very good — fresh, well-seasoned, and clearly made with care. A bit over-decorated for my personal taste, but overall it was delicious, as you'll see in the photos.

Unfortunately, the overall experience left me disappointed and a bit upset. I had made a reservation for 7:30 PM on a Saturday knowing you need reservations in high times. I expected to be greeted with a hello. Instead, we were ignored for several minutes upon entering. When someone finally acknowledged us, they didn’t even greet us — just bluntly said the restaurant was fully booked and motioned for us to leave. Only when I mentioned that we had a reservation were we reluctantly seated.

Based on other reviews of restaurants in Wismar, it seems the color of your skin can influence how you’re treated — and unfortunately, mine seems to be the kind that too often leads to being dismissed or overlooked. I was afraid I booked a restaurant that seems to follow these Notorious Wismar Norms...

As the evening went on, I observed many empty tables — even around 8:00 PM, nearly half the restaurant was unoccupied and the kitchen appeared calm. When I asked, I was told the kitchen serves hot food until 9 PM. At this point I was really confused that there were 3 empty tables at 7:30 pm when we arrived and we were the only guests to fill 1 of those tables.

To top it off, when the waitress came to ask if we wanted dessert, she walked away mid-conversation as I was responding. It felt rushed and impersonal, as if our presence was an inconvenience rather than a welcome part of the evening.

Great food — truly — but a disappointing and uncomfortable experience. Upon reading other reviews, it seems to be the norm and not an isolated incident. It seems they don't really care about customers willing to drop 150€ on a meal so I suggest you...

Vor 2 Tagen war ich mit meiner Frau dort essen. Da ich dort früher schon einmal hervorragend gegessen hatte wollte ich dieses kulinarische Erlebnis wiederholen. Und wir wurden nicht enttäuscht. Der junge Kellner war ausgesprochen engagiert, hat uns den Tisch wechseln lassen, damit wir am Fenster sitzen konnten. Der Gruß aus der Küche, Königsberger Klopse, bewies, dass der Küchenchef auch Hausmannskost beherrscht: Gut gewürzt und kräftig abgeschmeckt! Beim Essen gab es dann eine kleine Verwechslung, man brachte uns den Hauptgang, wohingegen ich jedoch das Pfifferlings-Menü bestellt hatte und die Vorspeise noch nicht bekommen hatte. Das wurde schnell korrigiert und dann kam eine Mega-Portion der leckeren Vorspeise, Carpaccio vom Schwertfisch, mit Pfifferlingen und Sommertrüffel! Für eine Vorspeise im Rahmen eines Menüs allerdings zu viel. Geschmacklich war alles Bestens, aber auch hier war mir der Vielfalt doch zu viel, auch hier wären weniger Geschmackskomponenten mehr gewesen. Der Hauptgang, der nun schon einige Zeit warm gehalten wurde, war dann geschmacklich wieder sehr gut, allerdings war der Fisch durch das Warmhalten ein wenig zu trocken geworden. Schade. Die Nachspeise war wieder etwas fürs Auge, sehr schön angerichtet. Mir war dann aber der Rhabarber doch zu viel der Säure. Aber Rhabarber ist nun mal sauer... Alles in allem ein schöner Abend, der sicherlich 5 Sterne verdient hätte, wären da nicht die paar Kleinigkeiten gewesen. Vielleicht klappt's beim nächsten Mal. Wir kommen bestimmt wieder! Ich finde es auf jeden Fall bemerkenswert, mit welchem Engagement und auf welchem Niveau hier gekocht wird. Und auch den sehr engagierten und freundlichen Kellnern gebiert...

Exceptional seafood restaurant! High quality both on the plating and taste. During my trip across northern Hanseatic cities, only few achieved the mastery in cooking the fish perfectly.
