AL PORTO — Restaurant in Argostoli Municipality

I went to this restaurant because of the 4.6 from google reviews and was rather disappointed to find a small restaurant opposite the ferry port, which is aimed at capturing the first tourists disembarking from the ferries, and doesn't feel very genuine. As a rule we avoid any restaurant that has pictures of the food on display as it is an indication of a mediocre standard. This time, armed with the 4.6 stars, we gave it the benefit of the doubt as it was very hot and we were hungry but unfortunately it was just as we thought. 3 of the dishes we ordered were not available and what came out was nowhere near the standard of a proper Greek local taverna. I'd recommend to stay away from the prawn salad, or pasta (prawns looked a bit worse for wear on both, and the salad was swimming in some strange white dressing which ruined the leaves). The grilled octopus was OK if a little too crispy, but overall not good value for money as it was quite pricey compared to what we ate. Armila gives a great welcome, the service is personal, food freshly cooked on the premises and prices are competitive. Don't be deceived by Al Porto's modest size and decor, it was by far the best place to eat (lovely rose wine by the caraf and everything we tried on the menu was equally delicious). We used Google reviews to guide us to this restaurant. Wish we hadn't bothered. We should have been alerted by the garish hoarding above the entrance.
