A visit to Kalabaka is not complete without paying homage to Meteora Restaurant Gkertsou Family. Founded in 1925, the restaurant comes highly recommended when speaking to locals in the area.
The restaurant was located at the town center and we were quickly greeted by their staff when we approached on a blazing hot weekday afternoon.
We ordered five dishes as we were greedy that way.
There were two salads - Meteora salad, a medley of fresh local produce consisting of rocket leaves, iceberg lettuce, cranberries, pomegranate and a couple more I can't remember, and Beetroot salad, as per its name. Both salads were ideal appetizers as they were refreshing and opened our palates for the mains to come.
Then came three meat dishes. Veal with rice, lamb with potatoes and rice, and lastly, stew pork shank. Unfortunately these were average - the veal was tough, lamb lacked flavours, and pork forgettable. I do recall however, that the rice and potatoes were good though.
Service at Gkertsou Family was awesome, as its staff were friendly with infectious smiles. They made the lunch experience pleasant for our group.
Overall, I do still recommend paying a visit as it is not often you can dine in a 99-year old 4th generation establishment (I visited...
Read moreI recently dined at Restaurant Meteora Gkertsou Family, a fourth-generation family restaurant, and had a mixed experience with the food. Here's a breakdown of what we ordered:
Meteora Salad This salad, made with rocket, spinach, iceberg lettuce, toasted sesame seeds, cranberries, seasonal fruits, and pomegranate with homemade dressing, was very refreshing. The fragrance of the sesame seeds added a lovely touch.
Beetroot Salad The beetroot salad was very sweet, and I loved the beetroot juice. It was a simple yet satisfying dish.
Veal with Onions Stew with Rice The onions in this dish were very sweet, but the veal meat was a bit tough. It was an okay dish but could have been better.
Lamb with Potatoes and Rice The lamb meat was soft but lacked the distinct lamb flavor I was expecting. It was decent but not outstanding.
Stew Pork Shank with Dark Sauce The pork shank was soft, and the portion was generous. It was a hearty and filling dish.
Overall, the food at Restaurant Meteora Gkertsou Family was average. However, the service was good, which added to the...
Read moreWe consider ourselves to have been lucky to have reached the restaurant before the rush hour on a weekday (12:45 pm). The waiter was very friendly (also proficient in French and English, along with Greek of course) and helped us to our tables. The food was also very quick to arrive and it was extremely delectable. I opted for the vegan Arabian salad and my girlfriend opted for a chicken with green peppers. The portions are extremely generous for the price and it might even be too much in case one orders a starter and a main course (we came after hiking 10kms across the Meteora without any breakfast so we were famished). We opted for the eggplant saganaki which was extremely good & we would really recommend trying this out (1 is enough for a couple). The salad was pretty good although it was a bit too much of parsley for me but that could me own taste preference (personally would prefer some more bulgur and less parsley). The chicken was also very well cooked and the portion is possibly even enough for 2...
