Where do I start.
I first visited the most magnificent country on earth Greece (ELLAS) when I was 6 years old.
Having travelled the majority of Greece over the years amongst the majority of the world.
I can honestly say Crete is by far the place that captured my heart.
My first time being the wonderful town of Kato Gouves, it really set the tone of what life is all about, I can wholeheartedly say Greek life is as close as you can get to heaven.
My first time visiting the Asteria was incredible from the food the dancing (channel your inner Zorba) and the warming atmosphere of the family that is an extension of your own.
Having returned over 20 times it’s never put a foot wrong and brings memories flooding back instantly.
After a near 12 year break I returned this year, the family the atmosphere and the warmth continued to radiate along with the beautiful food that brought a tear to my eye along with so many wonderful memories more than 30 years later.
If you want to experience Greece in its epitome, look no further than the Asteria you won’t be disappointed.

Read moreWe stayed at the hotel next door which offered good food but every time we walked pass the restaurant was always busy with a great atmosphere. We arrived back one evening missing our evening meal and decided to eat at Asteria, the food was excellent, typical Greek, and Mikey the owner came and sat with us for a while, and he's very open and honest, and nothing was to much trouble for him. He brought out banana raki, which was simple gorgeous, and between the 3 of us polished it off. We tried to get in on out last night but the place was already busy so decided to go to one on the main stripe that had 4.9 rating and won best restaurant for the last 10 years... (Kynonoz) Ordered meatballs and after 20 mins arrived, freeze cold inside, spaghetti, warm but didn't have time to complain as we need to rush to get the plane. Since being back I think I should had waited and got food that was a 5.0, hot, flavour and something you'd remember.
Highly recommend going for traditional homemade food and a good night with Greek...

One of the highlights was the homemade bread – freshly baked, warm, and absolutely delicious. It’s the kind of bread you can’t stop eating! The portions here are very generous, and everything we ordered was made with the freshest ingredients. You can really taste the love and care in every dish.
This isn’t just a meal – it’s an experience filled with tradition, flavor, and heart. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to enjoy true Cretan hospitality and food...
