Taverna Tzo — Restaurant in Municipality of Chersonissos

Exceptional experience from start to finish.

It’s not hard to see why this place has such great reviews and won TripAdvisor’s Traveller’s Choice Award. We have been staying at Mitis Renala hotel, but fancied something different, so decided to venture out.

From the moment we arrived we were greeted and treated like family. Nothing was too much trouble for Nico and the staff, and the food was delicious and homely in the way that makes you feel like your soul has been nourished. They were also very accommodating of our 17-month-old, giving her a little plate of different veg and cheese to munch on and a high chair which they vigorously cleaned before she sat on it. Everyone was so warm and friendly and we had great fun talking to them while eating, but they are never overbearing. You can tell the passion they have for their wonderful restaurant.

Oh and if the free dessert they gave us wasn’t enough, the owner even drove us back to our hotel to save us the walk. Such an unexpected, but welcome touch.

I simply cannot recommend this place highly enough. Go there and you’ll see why everyone loves it so much. 10/10

I’ve been coming to Kokkini Hani, Crete for over 20 years, and Taverna Tzo has been one of my favorite spots since the very beginning. This seaside taverna offers everything you want from a Greek island dining experience: incredible food, breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea, and the warmest hospitality you’ll find anywhere.

The traditional Greek dishes here are always fresh and full of flavor—whether it’s grilled fish, moussaka, or a simple Greek salad, every bite tastes like it was made with love. And the view? Absolutely unbeatable. Dining just steps from the beach with the sea breeze in the air is something you’ll never forget.

What truly sets Taverna Tzo apart, though, is the proprietor, who has welcomed guests like family for decades. Friendly, generous, and always ready with a smile, they make every visit feel special. It’s this kind of genuine Greek hospitality that keeps me—and so many others—coming back year after year.

The hotel I am staying at does not cater for anyone who is coeliac (they literally refuse to accommodate my medical food needs, not even stocking any Gluten-free bread etc) thank goodness for Taverna Tzo.

The owners are super friendly, atmosphere is great and we are always welcomed back.

They have a menu that is separately marked as GF for the items that are. I have eaten there numerous evenings in a row now and haven't had any repercussions.

Their stuffed mushrooms are delicious and the pork skewers (with chips and salad) are just as scrumptious too. (I am a creature of habit so haven't tried anything else yet - I was just greatful to be able to eat something more than salad from my hotel!)
