As it calls itself (when you get the bill), "zwei bruder" is a curious Greek restaurant. There's plenty on the menu that identifies as Greek, but the execution sits outside of the best examples. Take the beetroot salad. Most Greek places will cut the beetroot and leave it in larger pieces, adorned only by olive oil, maybe some fresh oregano and a side of lemon for you to apply. Here, they chop it small, add Greek yoghurt and chopped walnuts. That's kinda ok and kinda Greek, but not traditionally so (in my experience). It's more successful than the mousakka. Serving in a pot is very sifnos style (northern island near Athens). I get the ease and euro-convenience, too. But it can and does lead to problems when fired up from a long fridge stint. The potato collapses under the cold hot transition, and the eggplant sticks to and disappears within the clay borders. It just doesn't retain the structure of the daily made and held tray that is more common. The fish is reasonably cooked, though barely old enough to eat the bait that nailed it. The veg are a combination of sad, sodden zucchini, carrot, and potato, with the traditional boiled greens in fair condition. The service is really good and the place is just fine. But when you look at the food on the other tables and the pizza is the pick... you gotta wonder where the zwei Bruder are coming from, culinary speaking. It's fine, but there's better...
Read moreWe ate here for lunch and dinner, so there's sort of two reviews in one. We also started most evenings with happy hour here, 2 for 1 on draft beer which is always a winner. Happy hour is 18:30 to 19:30. Worth a mention as one day when we just came for happy hour, even when we ordered another round at 19:45 we still got the happy hour price.
Lunch visit We stopped here for lunch on our first day and we not disappointed. 2 plates of gyros, a mixed souvlaki and a salad with cheesey pita washed down with beers and wine. Excellent food, excellent service and a great price.
Dinner visit. The boys arrived early as usual for happy hour, but as one of us (me) had been out afternoon drinking I arrived a little jaded so ordered a double espresso. I think it's an English joke, it arrived in a cup and saucer. Lol. They also says "cheers mate" so we felt welcome on every visit. Anyway, I digress, on to dinner. I forgot to photograph the starters (see afternoon drinking) but we almost certainly had bread, tzaztiki and something else. Mains were vegetables done in the oven with feta, lamb in the oven with feta, mushroom risotto and the fish special called Amber Jack. We had beers and wine and the meal was finished with complimentary ice cream, fruit and raki. This is a fantastic place to eat and/or drink, reasonably priced with...
Read moreArguably the most delicious pizzas in Crete, highly recommended!
After a while, one might tire of the Greek cuisine in Crete, leading a proper German to opt for an Italian pizza on the island.
Although the selection of stone oven pizzas is confined to one side of the menu, the taste is incredibly diverse!
We were thoroughly satisfied with the vegetarian vegetable and buffalo mozzarella pizzas. Both were crisply baked, delivering the authentic flavors one would expect in Italy. The house wine was well-rounded and delightful, deserving a solid 5 stars.
A slight deduction is warranted for the somewhat sticky table and the fact that, even late at night, they adamantly refused to offer a table with a sofa. Despite three vacant tables and seemingly no one left on the street to...
