All the hotels and pensions are on one small road, we checked out a number of them and decided to stay at Antonio’s (called Andonios in the Lonely Planet). We paid 35 euros a night in August (no breakfast). It has free parking on site, nice basic rooms with a fridge and AC. Some rooms have newly tiled bathrooms, the upstairs rooms have a big private balcony. There is wifi but not accessible in all the rooms. The only negative thing was that the bed was a bit uncomfortable, we could feel the springs. The owner is quite a character with lots of info about local beaches to visit. We went to Red Beach which was lovely. It’s a hard 30 minute walk from the path that leads from the hotels car park area (risky in flip flops) – it’s better to take the path that goes behind the restaurants and bars. We really liked Matala, there was a good level of tourism, not too much but with ambiance, there was a relaxed hippy vibe, and lots of good priced restaurants with...

Antonios appartement do not obviously understand that. 3 min to load a page in the evening, nothing the next day. We had to go in a bar to book our next hotel. Annoying. But like always in Greece, a solution has been swiftly found, one uncle had the key. He was not there either the next day and we paid our room to the...
Read moreWe stayed here for a week in August 2020 and loved here! The owner and staff couldn’t help us enough and made us feel so welcome. The rooms were spacious (ours has a bougainvillea strewn terrace) and clean - cleaned every day. It is in an excellent location the beach and town centre (50mts) and has free parking. The rates are also really good too. I guess we were lucky to come in the time of Covid, as we were told it was quieter as usual. Matala is a great little place. Sunset Taverna and Red beach and Yannis’ legendary mojitos are a must! All of it is totally...
