The «Handmade Traditional Philo Workshop» is a family business that has been making the very elaborate baklava in a traditional way and under the eyes of the visitors since 1960. We happened to pass this beautiful bakery when we were walking through the old center of Rethymnon. The door was open, we saw two men at work and we walked in. Here you also have to buy the delicious, sweet baklava as a tourist and eat it later at home, in the hotel, or in your holiday apartment. If you search a bit on the internet, you will find a nice short documentary of over 7 minutes in which the making process of the filo pastry in this shop is filmed and explained. The owner Giorgos Hatziparaskos and his son Paraskevas proudly show their handiwork in the short documentary. I am afraid that this kind of small-scale crafts will disappear more and more. But before that happens, come and see and taste this. It is heartwarming to see and also incredibly...

Support a traditional business by shopping here. Over a half century old and made with pure love and by hand. Hard work for the masters creating these amazing sweets, baklava out of this world.

You might find it very sweet, but buy at least a small baklava to enjoy the taste since it is vacation after all.

You can see more of the amazing owner of this local business on a YouTube documentary which I saw years ago and finally got the chance to visit today;

100% value and supports the local authentic business in times of industrialization which keeps costs lower but doesn't give that extra tasteful experience like the...

Amazing place with amazing people. Their kadaifis are just a simple perfection and their baklavas as well. It's great to but then both and serve it yourself at the hotel /home with vanilla ice cream, it is something everybody needs on their Crete vacation :) Apart from this, the place is run with such love, care and tradition, that is just amazing to see how devoted to their craft they are. It's also nice to see how they prepare their Philo Pastry - we managed to be at the preparing around 1PM, but there should be also one in the morning around 10AM. Definetely a must-see...
