Kapilio — Restaurant in Municipality of Rethymnon

We were walking around the city, having marked a few places for dinner.

As we walked past this restaurant, we noticed it was quite busy, and all the tables were occupied. There were five of us – my wife, our three kids, and me.

We liked the atmosphere, so we asked the owner if he could call us when a table for five became available. He was very polite and did just that.

When he called, we were at a pizzeria feeding the kids.

We arrived at the restaurant, and our table was ready. My wife and I ordered three dishes and some simple wine. At that moment, we saw disappointment on the owner's face. He even said, somewhat demonstratively, “Two meze and one main dish?”

We confirmed the order, and while he pretended everything was fine, we could feel his disappointment that, in his opinion, we had made such a small order.

By the way, the waiter was very polite.

The food was good, but the overall mood was ruined. Later, I think the owner tried to smooth things over. I understand it’s business and all that.

But personally, I feel there’s something more important, especially on such a wonderful Crete island. In any case, we’ve often encountered a higher sense of hospitality in local taverns...

We were recommended this restaurant by a family member of the owner and I'm so glad we listened. The restaurant is on a slightly quieter street near the centre of the old town and like most restaurants is made up of tables in the street, I say street when in reality it's just an extension of the indoor restaurant. The atmosphere is lovely and the service is excellent. We both chose the chicken kapilio and omg it was like eating a little bit of heaven. The honey sauce is out of this world and the chicken cooked to perfection. We were given Complimentary dessert and when my friend declined as he can't eat chocolate they brought him out some fresh cherries instead. I would highly recommend...

We had the most wonderful experience at Kapilio. The entire staff was extremely kind and attentive to couples and families alike. It was heartwarming to see how the little kids seated around us were warmly welcomed and accommodated. The owner himself gave us personal details about the menu and recommendations - he took the time to answer our questions and really wanted to make sure we had a good understanding of what we were ordering! The food was truly delicious, and prepared with wholesome local ingredients. The outdoor seating was beautiful - kept warm with heaters when it cooled off, and we appreciated that it wasn’t in a busy area. We would recommend this exceptional family...
