Nostos — Restaurant in Municipality of Rethymnon

The food here is ok but it really isn't as special as so many people say in other reviews.

We had 2 salads: the Dakos salad, which was very tasty, with delicious feta cheese on top; another salad full of cherry tomatoes and only a few leaves of rocket, plus a ball of mozzarella on top; this salad was not worth the money for me, very simple and nothing special about it

We also had the shrimp saganaki, which was very delicious but it really lacked tomatoes. In their menu, the sauce from the picture is full of tomato.

The main dishes consisted of 2 fresh fish, the sea bream aka dorada and the grouper. They were ok but not very tasty, to be honest. We had better and tastier fresh fish in other restaurants on the island. The vegetables on the side were barely cooked at all, much too undercooked.

They also made a small mistake by bringing the fish too early, before we finished the other dishes. I saw in other reviews I'm not the only person who mentioned this, so they should really pay more attention. It's important for a customer not to feel rushed. Anyway, they had to take it back and bring it again in 15 minutes. The waiter said they will prepare 2 other fish and bring them freshly cooked but I didn't believe that... I mean, what restaurant does that? It's a waste of money.

Last but not least we had a baklava with ice cream, which was very delicious and looked like was prepared by someone aka home made, not bought from some store and put on your plate. The ice cream was nothing special, not home made for sure.

The staff is extremely friendly and welcoming but the food (at least some dishes) could be better. I don't think we will come back here, there are restaurants with better food in Crete.

The location is also lacking because it's right next to the main road, cars and people are constantly passing by.

Parking in Rethymno is generally a pain. There are a few parking spaces close to the restaurant but you have to be extremely lucky to find a free slot. We wandered another 15 minutes to find free street parking which was 500 meters from the restaurant. This was on a Monday around...

Our second year in Rethymno and Nostos was and is our favorite choice for food at any time of the day. Served dishes at Nostos were truly remarkable. From the moment we walked in, the cozy atmosphere set the stage for a delightful experience. We were welcomed with olives, tzatziki, and warm bread, a lovely start.

Along our stay, we had dishes that were a feast for the senses. The mussels in mustard sauce were tangy and flavorful, and the tzatziki was cool and refreshing. The seafood stole the show - the sea bass was perfectly cooked, the fried squid crispy, and the shrimp saganaki, cooked in a delightful ouzo sauce, was a surprising highlight.

The cheese saganaki and grilled anchovies were deliciously simple yet so tasty. The seafood pasta was rich, and the moussaka had layers of flavor that pleased our palates. The eggplant tower added a unique twist, with its combination of textures and flavors. The grilled octopus had a great smoky flavor, and the fried zucchini were a crispy treat.

But what made the evening truly special was our waiter, Edy. He knew the menu inside out and made us feel right at home. His recommendations, including the shrimp in ouzo sauce, eggplant tower, and moussaka, were spot-on, and he made sure we had everything we needed. The unexpected vanilla ice cream and raki were a sweet ending to a wonderful meal.

Nostos is an absolute must-visit for anyone looking for a superb dining experience. We enjoyed it so much that we dined there twice during our stay! From the moment we arrived, we were struck by the warm and welcoming atmosphere, which set the tone for an outstanding meal.

The food at Nostos is simply delicious, and we were impressed by the consistently high quality of each dish we tried. Everything was gorgeous but especially The Moussaka, halloumi, Chicken Souvlaki and the chocolate cake dessert!

What's more, we were treated to an array of freebies throughout our meals, which only added to the overall value and enjoyment of our dining experience. The portions were generous, and we left each time feeling fully satisfied and impressed by the culinary skills of the chefs.

But Nostos is more than just great food - the service we received from the staff was truly exceptional. They were friendly, attentive, and went out of their way to ensure that we had everything we needed to fully enjoy our meal. It was clear that they take pride in their work and are passionate about providing a top-notch dining experience for each and every guest.

Overall, we would highly recommend Nostos restaurant to anyone looking for an outstanding dining experience in Rethimnos. The combination of delicious food, generous freebies, superb service, and a splendid atmosphere make this restaurant a must-visit. We cannot wait to return on our next visit to Rethimnos!
