I have no idea why this place has so many great reviews. We booked a table for six for this evening after checking it was open in the winter. When we arrived the lady (owner, maybe?) was sitting in the back playing with her phone and we had to call out to her to get attention. She was very surprised when I said we had booked, and was obviously not expecting us but as the place was empty it was no problem and she pushed two tables together to make a six. The place has the feel of a cheap café. The service was terrible – she would come to the table for a drinks order, listen to the first request then turn and walk away without hearing the rest, so we had to keep asking her to go back! Despite us being the only table there, she never once came and checked on us or offered more drinks, etc. The food was very slow in coming, and when it started to arrive it took ages to deliver all of the dishes. The meat plates were messed up and wrong, and then we had to wait a long time for the rice to follow. We had asked for onion bhajis (a starter on the menu) to be brought as an accompaniment to the mains but they were brought as starters. They were very chewy and greasy. The main course was strange. I had chicken Rogan Josh which was very bland tasting, with a nasty gravy sauce. One of the party had do-piazza which we thought was a dish heavy with tomato and onions but there were no tomatoes or onions found. The rice was just odd, and the peshwari nan did taste a little bit like coconut but had this strange orange stuff in it, and tasted very plasticky (and no fruit in it. Also, it was quite expensive for how bad the food, service and ambiance is. My recommendation – there’s another Indian restaurant in Rethymno, go...
Read moreHopefully this is the correct Punjab Indian restaurant- the current signage makes no mention of Greek cuisine and is blue in colour, but the inside looks right, and so is the location, immediately to the left of the Swell Boutique Hotel which amused me for reasons you may or may not get. The Punjab has a decent menu of starters, mains, side dishes, rices and breads, and Mrs B had a "bean and mushroom" curry- very garlicky, which was lovely, the "beans" turned out to be peas. Delicious nonetheless, with an onion bhaji starter-yum- and pakora, oniony and potatoey with the customary batter, mmmmm, saffron rice, and a peshwari naan. I myself went for my usual curry of choice, the good old chicken tikka masala. This was sensational, good chunks of chicken with an excellent tikka flavour from a lengthy marinating session in a good strong marinade, and the sauce/curry/gravy was as delicious as ever, but with an additional slight curryness- very enjoyable indeed. Identical starter, rice, side and bead. Excellent portion size, enough to satisfy the heartiest appetite- mine lol 😎👌🏻🙌🏻😋 Cobra was in bottles, and ice cold glasses were available if a glass was required. All in all an absolutely excellent meal at a very reasonable price for the quality of the cuisine 👌🏻🙌🏻 All food is obviously FRESHLY cooked for each order, so don't expect quick delivery of your order, but instead just sit back, enjoy the beautiful view of Rethymnon bay, and have another Cobra as your holiday trickles on. The staff and the head chef care that you enjoy your meal, and wow we did. We'll be back next year if returning to Rethymnon. Yamas...
Read moreYou probably think that I am out of my mind for coming to a Greek island to have a curry. Let me explain. Once you’re done eating all the Greek food and dining at all the tourist traps around Crete, you’ll find that there must be a place that gives you an elevated dining experience. And sadly, that restaurant is not Greek.
This is perhaps, one of the best curries I’ve had. I’m saying that as someone who’s had plenty of curries coming from Malaysia and having lived in the UK. I’ve not found anything in London that has a curry that beats this place and I’ve been searching for a good curry in London for a long time. Both me and my wife were absolutely impressed. This family-owned restaurant should be celebrated!
The staff are friendly. The food is fantastic. The view is absolutely marvellous. It is an unfortunate observation to see that this restaurant doesn’t seem to get much attention, obviously given that it doesn’t sell much “local” food. I believe, however, great cuisine can be had anywhere and it doesn’t always have to be “local”. Why not have good food while you’re enjoying your...
