It is so hard for me to write this review because I genuinely think the people at the restaurant tried their best in the aftermath. Public announcement: Icelanders love curry. Even though you’d think they would make it the Nordic way, it is not the case—it will have curry. We came in with no reservation on a early Tuesday evening but they seated us right away. When two tables sat down about 15-20 minutes after us got their meal and we still had not gotten our appetizers, we got a waiters attention and asked what was going on. He immediately got our appetizers but then we waited even longer for our main course. When the two other couples who had come way after us finished their meal and left we were really upset. Did they forget about us? Our beers were long finished (and stayed empty till the end—no one ever asked us if we wanted anything else to drink.) Finally the meal came. But no cutlery. The server said he’d bring it but another 3-5 minutes went by so my husband had to get up at fetch him for a fork and knife. At this point I’m so mad I want to just stand up and leave but we were hungry (and had waited all this time!) To backtrack, we had asked if there was any cumin in the fish soup and we got a solid no. No cumin. When it arrived it was clear it had cumin. And very strong. Not in hot strong but taste strong. But it had not been advertised as a curry soup!!?? I ate my husband’s soup because he cannot have cumin. Huge bummer there. They did comp us the soup, but we said nothing of the service cause the issue with the curry seafood soup was more important at that point. (I was very surprised the “chef” did not know what spices are in curry. 4 ingredients, one of them is cumin. I’m not a chef and even I know that.) I do give the fish of the day three stars as it was very tasty according to my husband. But the fish soup was way too watery for my taste. All over the world they label “curry” if its in the meal. Somehow Icelandic people...
Read moreOur stop in Húsavík has been wonderful, and we decided to try a local restaurant with great reviews. The food was pretty good, and we started off with a round of cocktails, they were delicious! We liked the cocktails so much that we decided to order another one to share before finishing our meal. However, the second cocktail tasted completely different from the first one, it was like pure juice with almost no alcohol. I even had my friend try it, and she agreed that you could barely taste any alcohol.
So, I mentioned it to a male waiter, explaining that the second drink tasted very different from the first one. He immediately insisted that the drinks were made the same way and, in a rather rude tone, said that if I wanted more alcohol, I’d have to pay for a new drink.
We spent almost $200 there on dinner. I wasn’t trying to get a free shot. His attitude made me feel like I was being dishonest, which was really disappointing. I was there with my two best friends just trying to have a chill night, and the way he spoke to us was unprofessional. You should never talk to customers, especially ladies, like that. Do better!
Also, just to mention, according to what the waiter told us, their cocktails were pre-made. That was his explanation for why all the drinks should supposedly taste the same, implying it was impossible for one to have less alcohol. I was like… wait, pre-made cocktails? You guys pre-make them and just let them sit somewhere until someone orders one? Hmmm…...
Read moreMy experience here was not like that of other reviewers. I’ll summarize below
It seems the Spanish have colonized Húsavík, or at least, this restaurant. Every damn person here was either Spanish or Latino. No - not just the customers, but the staff as well. Now - I am not racist and I have no problem with Spanish per say, but it does detract from the whole Icelandic experience a bit when everyone is speaking Spanish to each other and you’re sat in the middle feeling awkward. If I wanted that vibe I’d go to a busy cafe in the center of Barcelona.
Secondly - it was obvious that not only did the Spanish customers get prioritized for service, they got BETTER service - more interaction, more smiles, more everything. Our menus were merely thrown on the table and the waiter promptly left.
Thirdly - aside from the nationality issue - the service sucked. Everything was being rushed - we were given food without cutlery, water jugs without glasses etc
The food itself ? Decent but I only had a soup. I came prepared to eat more but I felt I uncomfortable so just wanted to leave.
Someone out there will find my review useful, but if you’re Spanish - go right ahead because you’re at home (then why come...
