Square — Restaurant in Assam

My experience: I visited The Square, which is located on the first floor of the second building of Novotel for having coffee while waiting for a good friend of mine.

There was an absence of staff to greet me or at least let me know the place is open for dining, which is essential since the hotels can have a lot of private bookings occasionally. After a bit of clueless exploration of the place, I found a waiter who helped me find a table with a plug outlet for me to work on my laptop while I waited for my coffee. I received a delicious cup of Cafe Latte, for a very affordable price. Flavour wise the coffee was also not too bitter which made it perfect for me. The complementary biscuits were a bit sweet for me.

I also wanted to order some food, but I was not provided with a menu for probably 15-20 minutes. I had almost finished the cup of coffee, when finally one of the chefs from the live kitchen noticed that I was sitting at my table waiting for the menu. There was also a shortage of waiters at the place and they were probably busy with some work.

I had ordered a Chicken Kathi Roll after I received the menu. Hands down probably the best Kathi Roll I have tasted in Guwahati till now. This claim is coming from someone who has tasted a lot of places where they are served. The flavour profile was nice. Not too salty, neither too bland. The chicken was perfectly cooked and moist. I was content with the price of the roll since the place is inside a luxurious hotel and the taste was really good.

Chef Rabha who cooked the roll came to meet me once I was finished and done with the payment. He seeked my opinion about the roll and I was glad to give him my honest feedback.

Service Manager Jenny was also present when I was about to make the payment for my meal. She was really polite and apologized for unavailability of servers to attend at my time of visit.

Updated review: I went for second round of dining. I had tried the veg club sandwich. Very thankful to Chef Deka for making the sandwich savoury and delicious.

Final Verdict - 4.5/5 Please improve the awareness of servers.

At least I suggest greeting customers at the door when they enter and provide them the menu or some QR code with the menu and then leave the table for other work. I believe the customers can call the servers when they are ready to order the food.

The switch board from where I was charging my laptop also seemed in a bad condition. The board almost popped out but I didn't want to create an issue about it.

Overall, I like the coffee and gentle nature of the staff. I will drop in again if stars align and I crave for that...

If you’re staying in Novotel, best to avoid the buffet meals here. First, the hotel will tell you that you can discount coupon. So you have to go to the reception for a discount coupon like begging for food stamps. Then when you’re eating the cold buffet meal with little staff attention, a server will come and interrupt you in the middle of your meal and ask you your room number. Why do they need room number in the middle of my meal? “Hotel policy.” I object and they say it won’t happen again but it happens again and again, making you feel like you’re committing some crime and you need to prove your credentials to be allowed to have a buffet meal. If I’m not staying here I’ll pay and if i am staying here I’ll sign with my room number after I’m done eating. But they won’t let you eat even their cold sad buffet in peace. The dish did not taste particularly good. They were unable to accept orders for the chicken PAD THAI. The girl who served us she reckoned "she is over smart" , thinking that people didn't know what Thai food was . She lives in fools paradise .

The appetiser, particularly the prawn, was excellent, but the main meal was really lacking. I've had biriyani a lot in many places but the biriyani served was dry and not value for money and the mix vegetable was sweet .
