This is not the first time I am going there. Earlier I never used to put in a review. But now here it deserves a review. The restaurant was the earlier one named as “Kumarakom”, now renamed as “Kottayam the restaurant”. We went there with a lot of expectation. Kerala cusine and some Onam sadhya but sometimes when these expectations fails, it’s disheartening. Visibility : It’s on the main road, near to the HSR BDA complex. Parking : No parking available, but we can find space on the inside lanes, so it should not be a problem. Ambience : It’s a spacious one, good number of seating available. Not a fine dine restaurant, noisy always, staff running around, most of the time they we have keep calling them for any requirement. Food : Staff was not clear on what fish curries they had, I doubt they have gone through their menu itself. We had the Onam sadhya, kerala porotta and fish curry and a lime juice. Onam sadhya was ok, dal curry could have been better, No Ghee given along with dal, we had to ask for Pappadam. We asked for a little ghee and they denied it saying “We don’t have ghee”. The payasam was just average. Rasam was good though. Kerala Porotta was good, fish curry took ages to be served, by the time the fish curry and porotta was served, my friends finished their sadhya. Mmmm… Fish curry had One piece of fish in it, and with a lot of gravy to swim in. It was spicy but tasty. Rs 500 for the fish curry was “OVER CHARGING”. The guy sitting at the billing counter is another addition to the whole dissatisfaction. He is blunt, rude, no smile for a person making a payment of 2000 after the experience of the food and their ambience. We saw another table which had ordered some food, and the food was served so late where they asked them to pack it. I hope the management works on their shortfalls. 😌

Kottayam – Authentic Kerala Flavors in the Heart of HSR Layout Kottayam in HSR Layout is a wonderful spot if you’re looking for genuine Kerala cuisine in Bangalore. The first thing that strikes you is the ambience—warm and nostalgic, with traditional Kerala-style wooden furniture and simple décor that immediately transports you to a dining room back home in Kerala. It’s not flashy, but it feels authentic and comforting, which perfectly complements the food. The menu is extensive and celebrates the true diversity of Kerala cuisine. The Kottayam Fish Platter is an absolute must-try for seafood enthusiasts—fresh, well-seasoned, and cooked just the way you’d expect in a coastal Kerala household. For a more traditional experience, dishes like kanji (rice gruel), kappa (tapioca), appam, sadya, moru (spiced buttermilk), and payasam stand out. Each item carries the right balance of flavors and authenticity, with no shortcuts or dilution of taste. It really feels like the recipes have been brought straight from Kerala kitchens. One slightly unusual aspect is that most of the wait staff are from North India and are not always familiar with the names or details of the Kerala dishes. While this might cause a minor hiccup when ordering, it doesn’t take away from the overall experience since the food quality speaks for itself. Parking is convenient as the restaurant is close to the BDA parking facility, which is a big relief in HSR’s usually crowded lanes. Overall, Kottayam is an excellent choice for anyone longing for authentic Kerala vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. It combines homely ambience with truly traditional flavors, making it a must-visit for Kerala food lovers in Bangalore.

We had one of the worst dining experiences at Kottayam Restaurant. We ordered egg roast with breads, and what was served was completely inedible. The egg roast was overloaded with raw masala – it tasted like they dumped chicken biryani or chicken curry masala into it without cooking it properly. It was impossible to eat. When we complained, they replaced it with an egg curry, which was equally disappointing – it even had a stick in it, which they casually claimed was a “curry leaf stick.” That’s absolutely unacceptable in a dish priced at ₹225. If you are charging that kind of money, you must ensure proper quality, hygiene, and taste. Simply increasing prices does not increase the standard of a restaurant – better service and clean, edible food do. To make things worse, the area around the lift and its entrance was reeking of food waste. The foul smell was unbearable and unhygienic – a clear sign of poor maintenance. What should have been a quick breakfast ended up wasting over an hour of our time and left us extremely disappointed. Definitely not worth the visit and not recommended.

First impression : Location of the restaurant is very nice. Its in first floor, When we enteted the premises, on staircase, there was a bad odour of some chicken shop, for a restaurant entrance, it is not at all suiting. Service : Service people are very nice, they are fully apt for their job. excellent service. Food: We have ordered 3 dishes, Chicken mini sadhya, Fish mini sadhya and a chicken biryani. Biryani was good, Sadhyas were ok. I'm placing the photos of sadhya. Fish Sadhya has 2 fried Sardines and one fish gravi along with sadhya, for us the sardine fries were not at all good. felt like old sardines or semi dried ones(may be the selection of the purchase guy is not that good :) ). Chicken Sadhya has one chicken gravi and 3-4 peices of kebabs. It was good. Pricing: Pricing was ok for the sadhyas it was 369/- plus taxes. and biryani 249/- plus taxes. Ambience: it is ok, but not that great. theme is good, service is good, i have seen the duct of the A/C there, but unfortunately not that good cliemat inside. Cleanliness is there. not very crowdy, we visited Sunday around, 2 pm. (29/10/23). Whats not good: Pricing of the food is ok, but there was a component in the bill called service charges it is flat 10% of the bill (unfortunately, i didnt notice at the time of payment, fun factor, i never expected that kind of a charge!!!). That is not at all acceptable for a restaurant like this. Even there is a govt ordinance not to charge the compulsary tips from the customers, tips are to be paid on the will of the satisfactory customers.

For General info: Though many consumers are not aware that service charge is optional and the customer is only liable to pay if they want to. According to consumer rights, the customer can complain about the restaurant if they pressurise to charge service tax.

Many restaurants and hotels are misleading their customer stating the order from 2022. Regarding this, recently consumer forum has tweeted that no restaurant can pressurise any customer to pay service charges based on a 2022’s order.

The Delhi High Court on April 12, 2023, also stated the same thing. Justice Pratibha Singh also stated in her judgment that no restaurant can pressurise their customer on 2022 orders. Regarding this, the consumer forum also tweeted...

We went there and had special kottayam style sadhya.. ( it is said that the sadhya or meals listed in their menu was not available there on that day ) and the special meals felt like nothing special it contains one piece of sharkara upperi, achar, pappadam, and exactly two pieces of “thanuthu poya varuthupperi”! And something look liked koottukari( there was no presense of kadala or kadalaparipp in it and no varutharacha thenga and no sweetness of sharkara) and something look liked aviyal ( we guessed it with the yellow color) actually it was a sabji with some veggies there was no presence of curd in it and a very less portion of cabbage thoran like it will be barely a one teaspoon portion and a good portion of cherupayar thoran.the sambar was not kerala style it was like potato sabji with no vendakka or anything and too thick ( i dont know weather the kottayam style sambar will be of that consistency becoz i never had since i am from malabar region i am comparing the sambar with our side . But i had sambar at trivadrum area and i can assure that it is not a varutharacha sambar ) and the highlight is not this they server us with a portion of rice which will be okay okay for everyone and the rice is unlimitted but if we ask for some more rice their face change and the one who serves the food start giving doubtfull look to each other for 5 seconds .. and then they come with some boiled and rice and serve us with a table spoon!!! ( exactly table spoon ) they serve one table spoon of matta rice (guys u can guess how much rice will be that ) and they look at us and we have to tell them to put again and they serve second spoon and do give the same look as before and it repeats till we get the amount of rice we needed!! i am saying all this because it was a 450 rs ( without GST ) meal . If a person is giving that much amount of money either the food should be pf that quality or the service should be premium.. its none of the both !! Its a very normal dining space.

I had prawns fry also fromthere which was good and with a good portion of prawns in it.. i can hive that a 4star! But for a kerala...

I had been with my wife to this restaurant yesterday (20/07/2025) hoping for a quick lunch. Without browsing the ala-carte in the menu, we ordered vegetarian sadhya. After an agonising wait of 20 minutes, during which time we saw one individual running all over the place trying to garner the delay at different tables and then snapping orders in the region of the kitchen, while waiters scampered hither thither with no clear agenda. Another employer slightly better dressed (obviously someone higher up in the restaurant hierarchy) with glasses perched on the tip of his nose gave cursory glances and offering some damage control rhetoric to certain harried customers. Meanwhile, our 'special' thali arrived without the customary query from the waiter whether we preferred white rice or boiled rice. Accordingly, therefore, corrective action was taken to alter the type of rice which took another 10 minutes. Then with a mechanical 'sorry' pouted with great effort, our thalis were laid on the table. Just then a scream (being the beginning of a prolonged session of intense despair exuded by an aggressive specimen of a child) caused a temporary lull in the simultaneous loud talk emanating from various tables, before it resumed with renewed gusto. Now, coming to our food, rating it as such itself being an anomaly, we were bewildered by the sheer lack of taste in every single item on the thali. Not only that, the chana was not cooked which added to the total feeling of being cheated. Nothing on the thali was really worth consuming but being hungry and really with no choice, we somehow finished our 'lunch' with a feeling of being betrayed. For a price of Rs.400/- per 'special' thali, there was absolutely no value for money, much less anything 'special' about it. Besides, the restaurant charged me Rs. 63.44 as service charges WHEN THERE WAS NO SERVICE AT ALL. Even the finger bowl at the end of the meal, at this so-called fine dine restaurant, was not forthcoming. I have given a rating of 1 to the restaurant, because there is no option in the rating format to...
