The Flour Affair. Any place feels different at different times of the day. So does a café. I’m a morning person and we keep stepping out to discover food places during the early hours of the day. We see quite a few eateries and carts across the world (and Bengaluru is not different) that make and excel in just a few items. They keep it simple and deliver superlative taste. Most of the examples in India would be about local dishes elevated onto the pedestal by the consistent culinary brilliance of some gifted, humble, unassuming artists. Rare to find this happening among young food artists and that too in Western food. When simply excelling in basics, metes out soul touching food. And achieving that alongwith an amazingly relaxing and peaceful ambience is even rarer. (Most of them apply their science and art but aren’t really able to hit the spot or touch the soul). I find that there is one person and one place that seems to have achieved this. Been there a few times now over the past 6-7 months. Introduced to this place by my buddy Sunil, this place has made it to our list of top few ‘must dos’…. And ‘do more frequently’ It’s ’The Flour Affair’ on New BEL Road. The ambience is bright, happy and calm in an unpretentious way. U can feel the effortless grace and elegance in the proceedings. Simple food, well curated and churned out. When u tuck into it, you can feel that it is ‘Baked with love’. Which is their tagline. I haven’t felt a promise like this being delivered ever before. This place is world class without a fuss. They get their croissants right every time. Their sourdough toast is brilliant. Their Turkish eggs are to die for. Delicious. Egg salad sandwiches, Hot chicken sandwich, Roast chicken sandwich. You name it. They just know their bread, eggs and food and they ‘bake with love’. While they r at it, they have paid attention to excel in all the small things that will delight you - the coffee, the potato wafers. A place which hasn’t compromised on anything. This place will become ‘legendary’. How often would I step out to have an egg based breakfast? Never. Most of us are good at making it at home. And most restaurants are only incrementally better if at all. But this place is unmatched. It’s worth going to the place and enjoying the food and the ambience. Best savored at the Café. Experience a real café. Was a delight to meet Vinayak (the man behind the show) and chat with him....
Read moreNo consistency in service I visited this place twice, the experience on the first visit was superb. We had ordered black coffee, mushroom sourbread open sandwich and almond croissant. To our suprise everything was almost perfect, the service, food and ambience. With this experience we once again visited as we were longing to experience the same. The ambience was same, but the courteous service/greetings were missing. We ordered exactly the same items, to which the waiter replied that coffee and sandwich can be done but they are out of almond croissant, so it will take 20-25 mins. Since we were with a toddler, we skipped to a chocolate croissant which btw was no comparison to the almond one. We waited for the coffee and the sandwich, since the waiter highlighted Abt croissant waiting time we thought it ought to be serviced sooner. They struggled to give our order in 50 mins, that again was nothing as compared to the previous visit. When asked abt this the manager has no clue as to why the service was delayed. Very bitter experience. Not likely to...
Read moreI visited on a lazy Tuesday evening with my husband and daughter. The customer service was excellent, the very pleasant staff immediately offered a high seat for my daughter which was really helpful. We ordered a croissant Caprese sandwich and turkish eggs. Both were very good. The ambience really helped us relax and Rick Stein's Spain which was playing on the large screen in the cafe kept my daughter entertained. I really enjoyed the food and more importantly my time here. It was an unexpected find and is totally worth a visit, then a second visit and so on. I left with a sourdough load and an almond croissant, both which were greatly enjoyed at home. My only gripe was that I did not click...
