It was established on 27 October 1951 as a project sponsored by UNESCO and the Government of India. The library project dates to 1944, when Shri Ramkrishna Dalmia donated most of the amount required to construct a library building at the request of Gen. Sir Claude Auchinleck. In February 1950 the Indian government and UNESCO agreed to initiate the project, and the library was officially opened on 27 October 1951, by then Prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The library buildings were acquired between 1951 and 1953, with operations formally transferred from UNESCO to the Indian Government in 1955. The library provides training facilities to student librarians and social education workers from its early days. It is very near to old Delhi railways station and to chandni chowk metro station. Only thing is that the area around the library is not that clean and somewhat this all hides the library infrastructure itself with others. A lot of changes has been made in the library and still there are some modification going on. In the coming time the government will make it much better. There is self-study room, newspaper room kids study room, computer room, yoga classroom and a big hall or auditorium for any event. Overall it is good and getting better. I used to go public library on the daily basis from last 1 year after travelling from 20km from my home but now I left it and switched to a private library because mostly when ever I reach there even at 7 am I did not got the sitting for study as crowd is packed and they took the token from the staff member at 6 Am . Now the only place left is reference where you still find 35 sits (limited sits again) .You will get this token at 8:30 am so you have to be alert for that means ,have to make a queue there and wait .Since , it sits are limited so again it is possible that you didn't get seat again means you didn't get sit in air-conditioning.NOW, the only place left is park of library where you will found 6 benches . In park you can only study in winters but in summer it's too humid out there you even can't sit there for 5 minutes . Facilities are auswme for only those person who got the seats for study , for other it's nothing but waste . SUMMARY : IF YOU YOUR OWN STUDY MATERIAL THEN DO NOT GO THERE BEACUSE AT THE LAST YOU WILL FIND THAT YOU HAVE WASTED YOUR ENTIRE DAY .... I recently visited the Delhi Public Library with my sister, and while the collection of books was impressive, the behavior of the library staff was utterly disappointing. Despite being a student of Library and Information Science myself, I was taken aback by the rudeness and unprofessionalism displayed by the staff.

The staff's attitude was unwelcoming, and they seemed to interrupt our visit unnecessarily. The lady at the counter was particularly rude, speaking in an unclear tone and treating us as if we were servants seeking a free service. Her behavior was irritating and unbecoming of a librarian.
