Das Khaman Since 1922: A Century of Culinary Legacy
It's a humbling thought, isn't it? To envision a place that has been delighting tastebuds with a single dish, the humble Khaman, for over a century. Das Khaman, established in 1922, is a testament to the enduring appeal of simple, well-executed food, and a testament to the rich culinary heritage of Gujarat.
Upon entering Das Khaman, one is immediately struck by the sheer variety on offer. A kaleidoscope of colors and textures awaits, with a dazzling array of Khaman and Dhokla variations. From the classic plain Khaman to innovative creations like green Khaman and curd Khaman, the choices are abundant, making each visit an opportunity for discovery.
My first visit was a delightful initiation into the world of Das Khaman. The green Khaman, infused with fresh herbs and spices, was a burst of flavors, both familiar and unexpected. The curd Khaman, a delightful blend of creamy yogurt and tangy Khaman, was a testament to the versatility of this simple dish. And of course, the classic plain Khaman, a benchmark against which all others are measured, was soft, spongy, and perfectly balanced.
What surprised me most was the distinctness of each Khaman. I had naively assumed that the variations would be subtle, mere riffs on a familiar theme. But Das Khaman defied my expectations. Each variety had its own unique character, its own distinct personality. The green Khaman was vibrant and zesty, the curd Khaman was comforting and tangy, and the plain Khaman was a study in understated elegance.
Beyond the culinary delights, a visit to Das Khaman is a journey through time. The simple, unassuming decor, the efficient service, and the constant stream of loyal customers all speak to the institution's enduring legacy. It's a place where generations have gathered to share a meal, to celebrate milestones, and to simply enjoy the company of loved ones.
Whether you're a seasoned Khaman connoisseur or a newcomer to this Gujarati delicacy, Das Khaman is a must-visit. It's a testament to the power of simplicity, the importance of tradition, and the enduring appeal of good food, made with love and care. It's a place where you can taste history, one...
Read moreAfter a long time , i once again made the effort to visit this place for Undhiyu and Lilva ni kachori. Let me begin with Undhiyu. Obviously the undhiyu has gone super costly, Rs440/- for a kg, but is it worth it, well, depends on people's tastes coz it is super spicy & i dnt eat spicy, secondly it is loaded with peanuts and coconut gravy n dat is actually quite a turn off as it overpowers every other taste. It is extremely garlicky and the sweet spicy, garlicky and coconuty peanuty taste is totally not my type. It was actually my right mind dat asked to taste before buying such a costly affair n immediately realised that those waters are not my calling. But, as i was a bit low on energy, i ordered a plate of plain dhoklas coz i was sure that they wudnt be spicy at any point and i was right n as they were fresh n hot, they were very yumm. Yet, i did get myself Lilva ni kachori back home. Now, this is interesting, the lilva ni kachoris are also priced approximately the same as undhiyu which makes me think, WHY!!!! Back home when i opened the packet, i was super surprised to see very small kachoris with a very off colour dat did not even conform to the fact that they were fried. EXTREMELY BAD!!! I remember them being big, golden brown and filled with a delicious Tuver filling, and here was this totally unworthy piece of useless indulgence. Inshort, the one star is only for dhoklas, rest it was just a...
Read moreDas Khaman is a well known, reputed and famous Farsan house in Ahmedabad. It's origin is in Ahmedabad and the main branch is near Nehrunagar circle. It is working successfully since 1922. Apart from Khaman and khandvi, this place is well known for Patra, sandwich dhokla, rolls and many more Gujarati snacks.
Today, I visited their Navrangpura branch. The location is at the main road and is easily visible. I ordered one plate of Sev khamani and Tum tum Khaman each. To my surprise, the taste of Sev khamani was exceptionally delicious. The balance of garlic, spices, Khaman and sev was perfectly maintained. Along with it is served sweet yellow chutney.
Having tasted the food at Nehrunagar branch, I was a little upset with tum tum khaman. As I expected, Khaman would be extremely spicy and tasty, the case was the opposite. Infact, I found instead of spiciness they might have just tossed it in kashmiri red chilli powder to impart the red colour. Yellow chutney is served along with it.
Cost: 35 Rs per plate
To conclude, it's a great place to enjoy Gujarati Farsan and fulfill...
