My partner and I chose this restaurant to dine at on our last night in India. We were quite excited to visit having done some online research.
We arrived early and the staff at the main entrance to the hotel asked where we were dining. We explained that we would be dining in Suvarna but were slightly early so would like a pre-drink on the Verandah. The entrance staff walked us to the Verandah where we had an average cocktail. Sarjeet was our waiter, he was quite rude and condescending and even sniggered when we told him where we were staying in Jaipur.
We then made our way in to the Suvarna restaurant. Before we stepped through the door to the restaurant, Sarjeet leapt infront of us and told us that my partner's attire was unacceptable and we would not be allowed in (due to the heat, he was wearing a tailored pair of shorts. The shorts were coupled with a smart shirt). Whilst we do not have a problem with dress codes, I explained to Sarjeet that the issue surrounding my partner's attire should have been flagged upon entering the hotel or whilst we were having a cocktail at the Verandah Cafe. At both points we stipulated that we were dining at Suvarna Mahal yet nobody mentioned my partner's attire. If they raised it as an issue when we arrived my partner could have popped to our hotel to obtain smart trousers. As Sarjeet guarded the entry door, he made some remarks suggesting that we have never been to a fine dining restaurant before. My partner and I live in London and regularly visit Michelin star restaurants. I can assure you that we never experienced service as bad as this, or a problem with our attire.
After reasoning with Sarjeet and another restaurant manager, they permitted entry. The restaurant itself is beautiful - no doubt about that! We sat down and were presented with 3 menus. We opted for a lamb curry, chicken tikka and dumplings, all at the recommendation of our waiter. The head chef emerged from the kitchen and took the time to speak with the diners - this was a nice touch. I can honestly say that although this was the most upmarket place we ate in India, the food was the worst we had in India. It was mediocre at best. My partner and I both agreed that food from local cafes and street food stalls was 10x more flavoursome yet 10x the price. We left feeling utterly disappointed.
The next morning my partner and I woke with excruciating stomach cramps. It is now a week later and we are back home and are both still very ill and have even had to make a trip to hospital as we have contracted severe food poisoning. Whilst I can not 100% say it was contracted at Suvarna, I am 95% sure.
I am providing 2 stars as the restaurant is absolutely stunning and the chef took the time to speak with the diners. However, the food, the ambience and the service was abysmal. I will not be recommending this...
Read moreWe went there for our 10th anniversary. Some tips before you visit this India fine dining restaurant: Make a reservation. This place is popular and you won't get a table as a walk-in. Arrive on time: else someone else will be given the table. Dress up formally, yes its compulsory Do not take kids, they won't allow you to spoil the decorum of the place (its rude and they allow people from other nationalities to get kids) (that has taken half a point) Its an expensive place: 2500 to 3000 per person without drinks. The staff at the entrance reminds you that the cost would be about 2500 per person which is also rude as if one has made a reservation one is fully aware of the same. (That is why I have taken away half a point)
We made a reservation and arrived at 7 sharp for our dinner. When we arrived we had second thoughts looking at the lavish restaurant whether we would actually be able to afford it. Given the occasion was special we went ahead.
The place is grand with every piece of decor having a history to it. The person who welcomes you and gets you seated would tell you about the history of the place, the chandelier, the carpet, the paintings, the carvings etc. Its really grand.
The cutlery is gold plated and the utensils are silver (I am told). The menu though limited offers a variety of Indian cuisines ranging from Lucknowi, Awadhi, Hyderabadi, Rajasthani. We ordered a chicken starter, one main course, one dal and roti and rice. (we were focused on the right side of the menu).
The starter arrived and the plating was amazing and the quantity was also great. They served a lot of complimentary papad and chaat. Now the best thing happened, the chef came to visit and happened to be an old friend. Then it was a real treat. He sent a lot of starters, chaat, other samplers, dishes in main course and a complimentary cake for our anniversary. The food was amazing, every single dish that was served, service was impeccable and the atmosphere was rich and friendly. To top it all we were offered a 50% discount on what we had ordered.
Had a great visit. Cant say will keep visiting but a must try when in Jaipur (of course if you...
Read moreDuring my recent visit to Jaipur, I had the pleasure of dining at Suvarna Mahal, a charming restaurant known for its blend of traditional Rajasthani flavors and contemporary dining experience. The ambiance is elegant, with a perfect mix of royal decor and modern comfort, making it an ideal spot for both casual diners and those seeking a more refined experience.
Food: The menu offers a delightful range of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. We started with the Gatte ki Sabzi and Laal Maas. The Gatte ki Sabzi was rich and flavorful, with just the right amount of spice, while the Laal Maas was tender and had a deep, smoky taste. For the main course, we opted for Dal Baati Churma, which was an absolute treat – the Baatis were crisp, and the Dal had the perfect balance of spices. The Ker Sangri was another highlight, adding an authentic Rajasthani touch.
Service: The staff was polite, friendly, and attentive, ensuring that our experience was pleasant. The food arrived promptly, and the servers were knowledgeable about the dishes, offering good recommendations.
Ambiance: The setting was a blend of traditional Rajasthani elements with modern touches. The wooden furniture, vibrant wall art, and soft lighting created a cozy, yet regal atmosphere. It’s a great spot for both family gatherings and romantic dinners.
Conclusion: Overall, The Royal Spice provides a fantastic dining experience with delicious food, great service, and a beautiful atmosphere. While the prices were on the higher side, it’s definitely worth the visit for a taste of authentic Rajasthani cuisine in the heart of Jaipur. Highly...
