Beautiful family restaurant on a rooftop with good and freshly cooked food. The thali (king of thali - 305 rupees) was tasty. I liked the different vegetables a lot and the rice was buttery and flavourful. Compared to some other places we went though, it was on the pricier side and the portions were not so big. And even though we liked the savory options a lot we didn’t enjoy as much the sweet and drink choices. The kheer was probably made fresh too but it was served hot and tasted unusual, which was disappointing. The chai was the item we liked the least. It tasted very watery, vaguely spicy and not sweet at all, kinda like some bitter milk with a tiny bit of tea. Maybe something went wrong just this evening but really it was not it.
The service was also quite disorganized. We were hungry so we asked how long it should take and they said 25 minutes but it ended up being over an hour. I’m not sure Indian people have the best notion of time because when people tell me a time I can rarely trust it… On the positive side, everything we ordered arrived together, which was good, but then some dishes were cold-ish/lukewarm, only one was really hot.
I’m feeling bad writing this review because the savory options were genuinely delicious and the spice level was perfect. The lady is definitely a talented cook but overall it was hit or miss. The view of the rooftop on the fort was majestic and the family that served us was the sweetest, they clearly did their best. So this review is more like suggestions for improvements than criticism. If you have time for some freshly home cooked food in a beautiful setting you should give it a try, you’ll be...
Read moreThe owner of this restaurant, Avtar, and his family are genuine and kind-hearted people. Their number 1 objective is to provide safe, nutritious, and tasty food and lodging at a fair price. I truly believe their desire to serve comes from the heart.
I asked Avtar to have a nutritious and tasty meal prepared for 100 rupees. I asked him to surprise me. He suggested we do 120 and that would include more chapati and rice. I agreed. The price was more than fair for the quality of food I recived--which was authentic and amazing with very good portions. I think the same quality with personalization of service would have cost at least double at most places! To top it off the views of the fort from the rooftop--especially when it is lit up at night--are stunning! I was able to hang out and speak with the owner and my friends for several hours with no problems whatsoever and definitely didn't feel rushed.
After our conversation I honestly believe that this family really cares about their customers and will do you right. You will have an amazing experience and cannot go wrong eating here. It's inexpensive, very high quality, a wonderful view, and most of all caring proprietors. I really don't know what more one could ask for!
BTW, the owner--and his father before him--believes in making a personal connection with his guests. If he greets you outside his restraunt and humbly and politely describes his services and asks for your consideration,...
Read moreWe stumbled across this place on our way up to the fort and we were so glad that we did.
We had samosas at 40 rupees each, and paneer pakoda, as well as the most delicious ginger mint tea (never had that before). Loved it so much so that we came back the following evening for a cooking lesson.
We had a 2 hour class learning about the spices, preparing the vegetables and cooking everything and made a Tahli set - 5 different vegetables in a masala sauce, as well as Jeera rice, chapati and the fried chapati (cannot remember the name sorry!)
It is 400 rupees per hour per person, so in total for two of us we paid 1600 for the whole experience, pretty good considering that's dinner covered too.
The daughters and sons are sweet, lovely and their English is developing - they are keen to help with the cooking lessons too.
We ate our meal on the roof top - it's literally next to the impressive fort and it's also so peaceful.
They have rooms available at 500 rupees per night in the house, we were so gutted we had pre paid for a hotel - so much heart and warmth in a family home!
Also - they serve their tea in proper big mugs!! A delight if you drink buckets of tea like me
GO THERE and ignore the swankier looking places that are empty......Acharaya was by far the...
