The Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, is one of India's most magnificent and formidable forts, truly a spectacle of Rajput architecture and historical significance. Perched on a 400-foot (122-meter) rocky hill, it dominates the cityscape and offers breathtaking panoramic views of Jodhpur's famous "Blue City." History and Construction The fort's origins trace back to Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur, who began its construction in 1459 AD. He decided to move his capital from Mandore to a more secure and elevated location. While Rao Jodha laid the foundation, most of the existing structure dates from the 17th century, with significant additions and enhancements made by subsequent Rathore rulers over a period of 500 years. This long construction period means the fort showcases a fascinating blend of architectural styles from different eras. Legend has it that to build the fort, Rao Jodha had to displace a hermit named Cheeria Nathji (Lord of Birds) from the hill. The angered hermit supposedly cursed the fort with water scarcity, and to appease him, a temple and a house were built for him within the fort premises. There are also local tales of a common man, Raja Ram Meghwal, who voluntarily buried himself alive in the foundation to mitigate the curse, with the king promising to care for his family in return. Architectural Marvel Mehrangarh Fort is a masterpiece of design and engineering. Its immense walls, in places up to 120 feet (36 meters) high and 70 feet (21 meters) thick, seem to rise directly from the rock, making it incredibly impregnable. The fort has seven gates (Pols), each with its own history and significance, often built to commemorate victories. Notable gates include: Jai Pol: Built by Maharaja Man Singh in 1806 to celebrate his victories over the armies of Jaipur and Bikaner. Fattehpol: Erected by Maharaja Ajit Singh to commemorate his triumph over the Mughals. Loha Pol: Known for the iron handprints of the royal satis (queens who immolated themselves on their husband's funeral pyre). Inside the fort, you'll find a series of exquisitely designed palaces and courtyards, each a testament to the artistic and lavish lifestyle of the Rathore rulers: Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace): Known for its stained-glass interiors and intricate carvings, where the Maharaja held his court. Phool Mahal (Flower Palace): An opulent pleasure chamber adorned with gold filigree work and elaborate frescoes. Sheesh Mahal (Hall of Mirrors): A dazzling chamber entirely covered with intricate mirror work and colored glass, creating a magical ambiance. Jhanki Mahal (Glimpse Palace): From where royal women could observe the proceedings in the courtyard below through latticed screens. Takhat Vilas: Maharaja Takhat Singh's private chamber, showcasing a unique blend of Hindu deities and European ladies in its paintings. Mehrangarh Museum Today, a significant part of the Mehrangarh Fort has been converted into a museum, meticulously preserving and showcasing the rich heritage of the Rathore dynasty. The museum houses an impressive collection of royal artifacts, including: Palanquins and Elephant Howdahs: Elaborately decorated royal conveyances. Armory: A vast collection of historical weapons, including swords of emperors like Akbar and Timur, and even Rao Jodha's own Khanda. Paintings: Exquisite miniature paintings, including the famous Raga Mala series. Costumes and Textiles: Royal attire and intricate textiles. Musical Instruments: Traditional folk instruments. Daulat Khana: The treasure trove of the fort. Cultural Significance and Views Beyond its historical and architectural grandeur, Mehrangarh Fort is a cultural hub. It hosts significant annual events like the Rajasthan International Folk Festival (RIFF) and the World Sacred Spirit Festival, drawing artists and enthusiasts from across the globe. The fort's strategic location offers unparalleled, panoramic views of the entire city of Jodhpur, particularly the distinctive blue houses of the old city that spread out below like a...

Mehrangarh Fort: A Majestic Marvel in Jodhpur

5/5 stars

Located in the heart of Jodhpur, Rajasthan, Mehrangarh Fort is an architectural masterpiece and a testament to the region's rich history and cultural heritage. Perched atop a rocky hill, 9 km south of Mandore, this magnificent fort is a must-visit attraction for anyone interested in history, architecture, and culture.

History

Mehrangarh Fort's etymology is rooted in Sanskrit, meaning 'fort of the sun', a reference to the ruling clan Rathore's mythical descent from the sun god Surya. Founded by Rao Jodha in 1459, the fort was originally named Mihirgarh and has since become a symbol of Jodhpur's rich history and cultural significance.

Rao Jodha, the chief of the Rathore clan, is credited with the origin of Jodhpur in India.[7] He founded Jodhpur in 1459 as the capital of Marwar (Mandore was the previous capital). He was one of Ranmal's 24 sons and became the fifteenth Rathore ruler. One year after his accession to the throne, Jodha decided to move his capital to the safer location of Jodhpur, as the one thousand years old Mandore fort was no longer considered to provide sufficient security. With the trusted aid of Rao Nara (son of Rao Samra), the Mewar forces were subdued at Mandore. With that, Rao Jodha gave Rao Nara the title of Diwan. With the help of Rao Nara, the foundation of the fort was decided on 12 May 1459[8] by Jodha on a rocky hill 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) to the south of Mandore. This hill was known as Bhakurcheeria, the mountain of birds. According to legend to build the fort he had to displace the hill's sole human occupant, a hermit called Cheeria Nathji, the lord of birds. Cheeria Nathji was a man with the local population as his followers and hence influential in the region. When requested to move he refused categorically. This happened many times. Rao Jodha then took extreme measures and sought help from another more powerful saint, Karni Mata of Deshnoke who was a hindu warrior sage born in Charan caste. At the request of the king, she came and asked Cheeria Nathji to quit immediately. Seeing a superior power he left at once but cursed Rao Jodha with words "Jodha! May your citadel ever suffer a scarcity of water!". Rao Jodha managed to appease the hermit by building a house and a temple in the fort. Karni Mata laid down the foundation stone of the Mehrangarh Fort. Today only the forts of Bikaner and Jodhpur remain in the hands of Rathores, both had their foundation stones laid by Shri Karni Mata.

Geographical Details

The fort is situated on a high hill, spreading over 5 km, with walls up to 36 meters high and 21 meters wide. Its strategic location provides breathtaking views of the city and surrounding landscape.
