Chef King — Restaurant in Kerala

I recently had the opportunity to dine at Chef King Restaurant for breakfast, and while there were some highlights, there were also a few disappointing aspects that need improvement.

Starting with the positives, the food at Chef King Restaurant generally met our expectations. The Appam was cooked to perfection, fluffy and delicate, while the accompanying Egg Roast had a rich and flavorful taste. The Beef Roast and Chicken Sandwich were also satisfying and lived up to their respective descriptions. It is evident that the culinary team possesses skill and expertise in preparing these dishes.

However, the experience took a downturn when it came to the coffee we ordered. Sadly, it was overly sweet to the point that it felt like they were trying to compensate for something. It left a lingering artificial aftertaste that was quite off-putting. It would be beneficial for Chef King Restaurant to reevaluate their coffee preparation methods and adjust the sweetness level to cater to a wider range of preferences.

Another aspect that requires attention is the language proficiency of the service staff. While it is understandable that not all staff members may be fluent in the local language, it would greatly enhance the dining experience if they could communicate effectively with the customers. Clear communication helps in understanding specific dietary requirements and enables guests to make informed choices. It would be advisable for Chef King Restaurant to invest in language training for their staff to bridge this gap.

Additionally, cleanliness was not up to the mark during our visit. A thorough and regular cleaning routine is crucial in maintaining a hygienic environment for guests. Improving cleanliness standards will undoubtedly elevate the overall dining experience and leave a positive impression on patrons.

In conclusion, Chef King Restaurant provides a mixed dining experience. While the food, such as the Appam, Egg Roast, Beef Roast, and Chicken Sandwich, meets expectations and showcases the culinary expertise of the kitchen, there are areas that require improvement. The overly sweet coffee, language proficiency of the service staff, and cleanliness standards all detract from an otherwise pleasant experience. Chef King is one of the oldest and most iconic Indo-Chinese restaurants in Kollam. I have fond childhood memories of this place—it’s where I first tasted noodles, and my dad used to take me there about 25 years ago. Back in the day, it was the best in town!

Over the years, the quality had its ups and downs, but on my recent visit, I was pleasantly surprised. The food was fresh, flavorful, and reminded me of the good old days. It’s great to see Chef King making a comeback, and I’m excited to see them reclaim their former glory!

One of the good restaurants that I have found in Kollam... Not to boast about the taste but it is really fantastic.. Must try is the fried rice (veg /chicken /mixed) with their butter chicken boneless.. You may also ask for some chilly water.... The place ain't usually crowded but it has a comfortable ambience.. Not too much noisy or buzzy.. Its a quiet place most of the times.. There are outdoor seating available as well... Price is a bit moderate.. To put it into perspective, a boneless butter chicken cost around 200 and a veg fried rice around 110... I will post some photos...
