Sei Vui !

So if you ever are hungry walking about Dalhousie Tea board towards Central Metro, know there is a saviour !

We found this place on a terrible hot day in June 2024, having spent a long time in the light markets on Ezra street and being famished and tired just started to look for nearby eateries.

Good fortune led us here because it's one of the best Chinese- Vietnamese eateries in town. What started out as a boarding house for Chinese workers in 1896 was bought out by the 19 Chinese families living there and restoration has happened as recently as 2018! A beautiful red brick building interspersed with the iconic old Calcutta green shuttered windows and Chinese lamps hanging from the pavement facade add just the right amount of ambience to get you excited about your upcoming meal. Solid wood and glass main door with the restaurant name in Chinese on a wooden block above the door frame is a great entrypoint.

Place is very neat, seating is on comfortable wooden chairs with enough space between tables. Lighting is not dim as you will find in many Chinese style eating houses but also not too bright to be a mood killer.

Now for the food - we went at around 4 pm on a weekday and still everything on the menu was available and the place was full so you can be assured the kitchen is always up and running.

We had the Crispy garlic pepper pork to start off with and it was good. Portion is good and it's a no nonsense fried pork appetizer with a healthy mix of lean meat and fat, fried with onions, spring onions and the spices already in the name. Personal opinion - a good Chinese place must have fresh pork and they do!

Next up we went for the crowd favorites again ( weekday, late lunch so went for the usually safe options) - 1 plate of mix rice and one full plate of Chicken in Hunan sauce ( they still have full and half plates - which is great !)

The portions again very good , the 2 of us couldn't finish and had to pack a quarter to go. Taste was very good , the rice was simple, non spicy, generous helpings of eggs, chicken, prawn and pork. (They will make it without pork if you want it that way)

The chicken was an excellent preparation with a handful of sliced shittake mushrooms and bok choi in the sauce. Chicken was nice and tender in lightly coated big sized pieces. One full portion is surely enough for two.

Couldn't really eat much else on the day but I am surely looking forward to trying the Vietnamese paper rolls and the seafood section next time around !

PS - Yune Leong Futh Church is right next to the restaurant in the same building and if it's open you can head in there for an authentic Chinese temple experience as well. Blackburn lane opposite to BSNL building Poddar court has quite a few old Chinese building which have unique and well maintained front facades for your...

I recently had the pleasure of dining at SEI VUI Restaurant, a newly renovated and charming Authentic Chinese restaurant located near Tirreti Bazaar on Blackburn Road in Kolkata. The restaurant, often referred to as a Chinese Eating House, offers a delightful culinary experience with its extensive menu of Chinese delicacies. During my visit, I had the opportunity to try their Moon Kao Pork, Chicken Nasi Go Reing Fried Rice, and Pork in HongKong Sauce, which left a lasting impression on my taste buds.

The ambiance of SEI VUI Restaurant is inviting, with its tasteful decor and comfortable seating. The interior is adorned with Chinese elements that exude an authentic and vibrant atmosphere. The staff members were attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable, adding to the overall pleasant dining experience.

First on my plate was the Moon Kao Pork, priced at 280/-. This dish showcased the skillful art of Chinese cuisine with its succulent pieces of pork stir-fried to perfection. The meat was tender and juicy, paired flawlessly with aromatic spices and a delightful glaze. Each bite was a burst of flavors that left me wanting more.

Next, I savored the Chicken Nasi Go Reing Fried Rice, priced at 240/-. This dish combined the classic flavors of fried rice with tender chunks of chicken, creating a harmonious blend of textures and tastes. The rice was perfectly cooked, not too greasy, and complemented by the well-seasoned chicken. It was a satisfying and filling option that would please any fried rice enthusiast.

Lastly, I indulged in the Pork in HongKong Sauce, priced at 160/-. This dish featured succulent pieces of pork cooked in a flavorful Hong Kong-style sauce. The sauce had a perfect balance of sweet and savory, coating the pork with its tantalizing aroma. It was a delightful combination of flavors that showcased the skillful mastery of Chinese culinary techniques.

Overall, my experience at SEI VUI Restaurant was delightful. The restaurant offers a wide range of authentic Chinese dishes that are reasonably priced, considering the quality and portion sizes. The flavors were bold and authentic, reflecting the true essence of Chinese cuisine. The staff was attentive, ensuring a pleasant dining experience.

My only minor critique would be that the menu could benefit from more vegetarian options to cater to a wider audience.

Sei Vui Chinese Restaurant in Kolkata offers a delightful dining experience with its authentic Chinese cuisine and warm ambiance. Located in a bustling part of the city, this restaurant attracts both locals and visitors alike, and it certainly lives up to its reputation.

As you step inside Sei Vui, you are greeted by friendly staff members who are attentive and eager to assist you. The restaurant's interior is tastefully decorated, creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. The seating arrangements are well-spaced, allowing for privacy and a relaxed dining experience.

Now, let's talk about the food. Sei Vui specializes in Chinese cuisine, and it does an excellent job of capturing the essence of traditional flavors. Their menu offers a wide variety of dishes, ranging from classic favorites to unique specialties. Whether you're a fan of dim sum, noodles, or stir-fried dishes, Sei Vui has something to satisfy your taste buds.

One standout feature of Sei Vui is the quality of their ingredients. The dishes are prepared using fresh and high-quality ingredients, which is evident in the flavors and textures. The use of authentic Chinese spices and seasonings adds an extra dimension to each dish, making them incredibly flavorful.

The portion sizes at Sei Vui are generous, ensuring that you won't leave the restaurant hungry. The presentation of the dishes is visually appealing, reflecting the care and attention to detail in the kitchen. From the first bite to the last, the food at Sei Vui is consistently delicious and satisfying.

In terms of service, the staff at Sei Vui are courteous, knowledgeable, and prompt. They are more than happy to recommend dishes and accommodate any dietary preferences or restrictions. The wait times for food are reasonable, and the overall dining experience is smooth and enjoyable.

However, while Sei Vui Chinese Restaurant is undoubtedly a great place to enjoy Chinese cuisine, there is one aspect that could be improved upon—the ambiance. While the interior is pleasant, it lacks a bit of character and could benefit from some additional decorative elements to create a more immersive Chinese dining experience.

In conclusion, Sei Vui Chinese Restaurant in Kolkata is a top-notch establishment for lovers of Chinese cuisine. With its authentic flavors, quality ingredients, and attentive service, it offers a memorable dining experience. Despite the minor flaw in ambiance, Sei Vui remains a go-to destination for anyone seeking a delicious Chinese meal...
