Let me tell you a story. The story of the best Chinese Restaurant in the City of Joy, Kolkata.

"TUNG NAM EATING HOUSE!" ♥️

Delicious in taste, too much variety in the menu, pocket friendly, authentic, sufficient in quality and the best service you can ask from the the most polite and well behaved staff and owners. I have been eating here for almost ten years and since I haven't found a Chinese restaurant that serves better chinese food. I will tell you about the dishes that me and my wife had the last time we've eaten here but trust me when I say this, everything on the menu is delicious and worth having. I have tried them all. So the last time we visited we had:

Pork Yaam Wonton 🐖🥟 Rating: 5/5 Price: 150/- Some of the best wontons I have ever had. So delicious and soft and the perfect starter for a perfect chinese meal. It tasted even better with their signature sauces.

Chicken Fried Rice 🐓🍚 Rating: 5/5 Price: 150/- Absolutely delicious well cooked fried rice with alot of chicken pieces and veggies. Quantity is sufficient for two people but I suggest order two plates for two people because it tastes so damn good. Price is also very cheap.

Chili Chicken 🍗🍲 Rating: 5/5 Price: 190/- Superb in taste, well cooked and big pieces. The chicken was so good, tender and juicy and it contains eight pieces. So as you can tell the price is also very cheap.

Pork Fried Rice 🐷🍚 Rating: 5/5 Price: 150/- Absolutely delicious well cooked fried rice with alot of pork pieces and veggies. Quantity is sufficient for two people but I suggest order two plates for two people because it tastes so damn good. Price is also very cheap.

Pork Hamei Sauces 🍖🥘 Rating: 5/5 Price: 190/- Taste is King! My favourite dish from Tung Nam. Big, juicy, tender and the most succulent pieces of pork cooked in the most delicious sauce. The dish to die for.

I don't think any restaurant in Kolkata serves berter pork dishes that Tung Nam and you'll find alot of reviews and vlogs in YouTube about Tung Nam but let me tell you none of those reviews tells the real story about Tung Nam. Only people like us who have been eating at Tung Nam from as long as I have can tell those stories. This is from the heart. Thank You, Tung Nam. With Love,...

Me being from Mumbai, I had always heard, read and seen (on social media) about the authentic Chinese food outlets in Kolkata. Work enables me to travel to Kolkata atleast twice a year .. and a few weeks ago I had the chance to visit this iconic place. And it lived up to my expectations .. my expectations were that I will be served a really good meal which were met. My expectations were also that the ambiance is of a family run outlet which were met and my expectation of the service being cordial yet a little slow were also met.

The owner was sat in the kitchen, there was exactly one server who took orders from about 8-9 tables (which can be shared) .. and the same server served food to each and every table, mind you I went on a Friday afternoon .. and the place was 70% full when I went at around 1:30 in the afternoon ... The other patrons were mainly local working professionals and that gave me the confidence that the food is going to be good ..

I ordered their mixed Mei Foon .. which is rice noodles with Chicken, Scrambled Egg, Pork, Shrimps and Crab. On the menu they did not have a half option and I ordered a full portion (which is enough for two with a gravy item, which I did not order). I realised 7 bites in that the Mei Foon by itself is going to be dry for a single person like me. It tasted amazing though .. each meat was fresh, including crab meat, the shrimps were small.

I requested the waiter that he give me a small bowl of clear soup that would help me consume whole portion of mei foon. He thankfully obliged and I got a small bowl of super hot soup which was fabulous by itself.

I will certainly visit again to try their wontons which the other tables kept ordering in plenty.

I would recommend that if you want to visit here, come in a group of 3 and one can try more items...

One needs to wait minimum 10 mins once you order as the kitchen is dishing out one dish at a time which is fresh and lava piping hot which is what I want.

Place is affordable as well if you are in a group of 3+ you will not spen more than 300-350 per individual ...

Certainly visiting again 3-4 months from now. I cannot find the same quality, quantity and authenticity of chinese food here...

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Tung Nam, one of the oldest Chinese restaurants in Kolkata. Run by a Chinese family, this place offers a wide variety of delicious Chinese cuisine at budget-friendly prices. While the restaurant may not boast a luxurious ambiance, it more than makes up for it with its authentic flavors and friendly service.

Tung Nam's limited seating arrangements can be a bit challenging, especially during peak hours and weekends. Due to the limited number of seats, it tends to get crowded quickly. So, I would suggest planning your visit accordingly or making a reservation in advance.

The restaurant's shady ambiance may not appeal to everyone, but it is important to remember that people flock to Tung Nam primarily for its mouthwatering food rather than its decor. Once you take a bite of their authentic Chinese dishes, you'll understand why it's been a favorite among locals for decades.

One dish that I highly recommend trying is their Ride Noodles. The flavors are rich and the noodles have the perfect texture. Additionally, Tung Nam offers a diverse range of options including pork, chicken, vegetable, and prawn/fish dishes, ensuring there's something for everyone's taste.

Parking can be a slight issue, as the restaurant only offers two-wheeler parking on the street, which is chargeable. Finding a spot for a four-wheeler can be quite challenging in the vicinity, so it's advisable to consider alternative transportation options or plan accordingly.

In conclusion, Tung Nam is a hidden gem for those seeking authentic Chinese cuisine in Kolkata. The restaurant's affordable prices, wide variety of dishes, and friendly service make it a worthwhile experience. Despite the limited seating arrangements and lackluster ambiance, the flavors of their food will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression. Give it a try, and savor the delightful taste of Tung...

"Filth behind mask of reputation"----- that is an oneliner to describe this restaurant (the owners call this an eating place). By virtue of my staying for more than a decade across the street in the 70's through early 80's I know this locality well. Those days there were many road side eateries here (Tereti Bazar/Poddar court) owned and operated by Chinese people as this place has been dominated by residents of Chinese origin. They served original recipes of China and I really enjoyed them. With time these eateries have dwindled and only 4 - 5 of them exist today. Tung Nam is one of them. The last time I visited the place to have a lunch grub was in the recent past (a couple of days). I decided to write a review of the place and took some pics and spoke to the owners. The place is very basic, without AC and fairly large and airy. The food quality is just okay for a Chinese food outlet owned and operated by Chinese people (a family business). Prices are much higher for the quality. While the area for eating out is clean and maintained well, the kitchen was a filth. I was not allowed to take any pics of the kitchen after I was able to just peep into the space. It was dirty, congested and the people doing the food were dirty. It was unhygienic. For a place of repute, such a sense of hygiene was unacceptable. Also, the hospitality is nowhere near warm. I have rarely (if ever) seen any smiling face. They are too robotic who understand only business. I also doubt if they ever pay taxes (they always give bill scribbled on a piece of paper). Please be careful if you ever to eat here. There are better choices nearby (Pou Hing, D'Ley and See Vui restaurant).
