Sonargaon is one of my favorite restaurants in Kolkata. I had been to this restaurant a couple of times. The ambiance of the restaurant is beautiful & classic one, the décor is relevant to the village of Bengal. Although the seating could have been more comfortable for a fine dining experience! I visited this restaurant with my family.
We started with Tomato Dhanyia Shorba & in the Starters we had ordered: Bhatti Ke Badaami Aloo (Potato stuffed with bananas, chillies & prunes, flavoured with almonds, finished in a tandoor), Mirchi Pyaz Subz Seekh (A creamy vegetable kebab with subtle spices and white sesame crumbled with green chilli & choice of onion or bell peppers),
Bhatti Ke Badaami Aloo was good & yummy. Mirchi Pyaz Subz Seekh was just OK, didn’t get the flavor as expected!
In the Main Course, we had ordered: Dal Sonargaon (Black Lentils simmered overnight in the classic "Dum" style & finished with butter & cream), Tawa Subazi Jhalfarezi (Exotic vegetables tossed with freshly ground spices), Panner Makhanwala (Cottage cheese cooked in tomato gravy finished with fenugreek seeds, dry fenugreek & cream), In the breads we had ordered Tandoori Roti, Butter Naan, Garlic Naan, Tandoori Kulcha (with a filling of masala), Subz Biryani (Seasonal vegetables & Basmati rice cooked in the "Dum" style, with flavours of saffron, mace & fresh mint leaves), Fresh Lime Soda & Iced Tea beverages we had ordered along with the main course.
Dal Sonargaon, Tawa Subzi Jalfarezi, Garlic Naan & Tandoori Kulcha were very good & tasty. Although Paneer Makhanwala was just OK! Sybz Biryani was also good.
Somehow this time my overall experience was not good! We faced service issues like our glass was not filled with the water. Frequently, we had to ask the staff to fill the water! Secondly, few of our order was not served as the staff completely forgot about it, we had to remind them. Surprisingly, the restaurant was not full but still we faced such basic issues!
Cost wise, considering the overall taste & service, it’s on the...
Read moreSonargaon is a restaurant which is themed like an old village, it has a well too, along with windows decoration on the walls which enhances the ambience.
While the atmosphere is set, the food is what complements it the most. Each and every item that I ordered had completely exceeded my expectations.
For starters, tried the Mutton Galouti Kabab, which just melts in mouth, with flavours spreading everywhere. It was so soft and tender, despite being lamb, that I did not even have to chew it.
For main course, ordered Dal Makhani, Garlic Naan, Mutton Kosha and Chicken mirchi. Obviously I cannot express the sensation I felt when I tasted all of them, here in this post. It is a must try and I am telling you, it can get addictive too...it is so good! The best North Indian food I ate!
Also tried out their Virgin Mojito and Peach Lime Soda, sweetness and taste were both on point.
Everything is of 5 star quality, however I feel that the seating area could have been larger( I get it they are implementing a village theme but still).
I think I am gonna save money every month to visit the grandeur Taj hotel and visit this iconic restaurant 😅.
Tata Neu holders can accumulate points or redeem here.
P.S. Sonargaon was initially an authentic bengali restaurant, now it has been changed to North Indian, however, some bengali diahes like kosha mangsho is still there. I tried out both the bengali and north Indian cuisine, and I don't know how or why, the blending of the dishes was so perfect that I forgot which genre of food I am eating.
Overall a must must try. Apart from the food, since it is Taj, hospitality, service and cleanliness are superb...

I was very excited to visit this place for the first time but my joy was quickly killed with the average food that was served here.
We first ordered some starters which took an incredibly long time to come out of the kitchen (almost 20 mins). We asked for recommendation and based on it ordered Raan Sonargaon (which was average), Kakori Kebab (tasted good) and bhatti ki murg (which was quite dry and flavour was ok). All of the items tasted average and was not even close to the most flavourful food I've had in this city.
The menu was quite confusing: This is marketed as a Bengali restaurant but half the items are from North India? Many dishes I failed to find any link with our food history. Maybe I'm wrong here and I'd be happy to be corrected.
We were so disappointed by the limited amount of mutton dishes (not lamb) on the menu (I think there is only 1? Even the biryani is lamb) that we decided to grab main course at the adjoining Cal 27 instead. Food was much better there.
Service was quite average and we had a far better service experience at Cal 27.
I do not know what happened here. Maybe it was a bad day in the kitchen? Who knows! But this experience definitely left me sour and unwilling to visit this restaurant again...
