When Tamarind Kolkata opened it's doors some 20 plus years ago, the city officially got it's first South Indian Restaurant offering Non-Veg varieties of different regions and states mostly around the coastal area. You just get to experience South Indian food beyond Dosa, Idly and all those familiar dishes one would think of when they visit a South Indian Restaurant.

Over here things are much more special and indeed a homage to many culturally rich dishes which most of us wouldn't be knowing till yesterday, but Tamarind has binded all these rich cuisines from Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Coorgi, Karnataka, Goa, Coastal Odisha and of course Bengal and welcomed everyone to relish it's preparations under the guidance of trained chefs who carefully keep the authenticity of the dishes intact by maintaining the flavour and true presentation.

I was recently very delighted to come here and celebrate their existence over the years, treating their patrons such great food and making a big name in the city. I had the opportunity once again to feast over their signature dishes like Coorg Chicken, Fish Porichatu (Bhetki), Kodi Sukkah, Appam, Mutton Stew, Malabar Paratha, Chicken Chettinad and Ambat Dal. The meal was such a heavenly affair that i though i was sitting somewhere in the Southern part of India, getting exactly the true taste of the food like the way how it's done.

Would urge all the foodies out there to definitely visit this place and explore the culinary delights it offers as it would totally turn out to be a memorable dining.

Tamarind Restaurant offers an exquisite dining experience with its blend of authentic flavours and inviting ambience. The restaurant specializes in Indian and Asian fusion cuisine, with a menu that features a variety of aromatic curries, tandoori dishes, and flavorful vegetarian options. The spices are well-balanced, delivering just the right level of heat without overwhelming the palate.

The service is attentive and knowledgeable, with staff eager to explain dishes and make recommendations. The atmosphere is cosy and elegant, providing a great setting for both casual meals and special occasions. The decor includes rich colours and soft lighting, contributing to a warm, welcoming environment.

Standout dishes include the tamarind-glazed lamb, which is tender and perfectly cooked, and the mixed vegetable curry, bursting with fresh ingredients and vibrant flavours. The naan bread is also a highlight, light and fluffy with a slight crisp on the edges.

For dessert, the mango sorbet and traditional Indian sweets like gulab jamun are delightful, offering a refreshing end to the meal.

Overall, Tamarind Restaurant is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience exceptional Indian cuisine with a modern twist. Whether you’re a connoisseur of Indian flavours or a newcomer, the restaurant provides a memorable...

Tamarind is certainly one of the upbeat restaurants in Kolkata. It certainly has made a mark with the variety of food and quality that it serves. I've been to the restaurant several times but writing a review always skipped my mind as I got mind-blowen by it's amazing food. :P This time, however, I ensured that I certainly give the restaurant its due credit. I visited them on Valentine's Day with friends. The place was very prettily decorated with heart-shaped balloons and red roses. They even had a special set menu on offer for the couples celebrating the special day. We however stuck to the ala carte menu. We ordered the ghee roast chicken, massa stew, Chettinad Chicken and appams (both the plain and cheese options). The ghee roast chicken was remarkable with cashewnuts and the subtle flavour of ghee in it. The Massa Stew is basically Mutton Stew made in coconut gravy with potato cubes-- very light on the stomach and yummy to eat alongwith the Appam. I had ordered a cheese appam which was crisp and loaded with cheese. The Chettinad Chicken lived upto its name and its base origin. Ratings are as below: Food: 5/5 Quality: 5/5 Decor: 5/5 Service: 4.5/5

Tamarind is the place for South Indian non-vegetarian food in Kolkata. They have a large selection of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, but we stuck to non-vegetarian only. Appam is the bread, light as well as fluffy and plain, egg and cheese options are available. We ordered both plain and cheese. Never had South Indian soup apart from Rasam; so ordered Alisa. This soup is made from crushed wheat, coconut milk, spices and we added chicken and were delightfully surprised; light and flavorful. Kothu Paratha is so different; paratha made into pieces, contains onion, tomato, spices and we opted for chicken. One such paratha is enough for a meal; comes with salad and salan gravy. Malabar Chicken was pleasantly light with coconut gravy and spices. Chicken Chettinad is more spicy but very flavorful and has flavors we do not find in North Indian or Bengali chicken curry. It's hot, but the heat comes more as an aftertaste. Kori Gassi is chicken cooked in Mangalorean spices; this had the strongest taste of all three chicken dishes. One observation though - most chicken dishes have five pieces, why not six?
