Deshapriya park ! we all know about " সবচেয়ে বড়ো দুর্গা " !

Almost every Twitter handle and Facebook wall had a mention of the 80-feet goddess standing tall in Kolkata. Even Amitabh Bachchan tweeted the picture of this puja season's star attraction.

Deshapriya Park, with the much touted 'tallest idol in the world', is one of the 50 grand puja committees out of the 2,500-odd pujas that took place in Kolkata around this time of the year, for a total budget of Rs 250 crore.

Deshapriya Park has, however, set the bar higher and grabbed eyeballs with its corporate sponsor and mega budget.

Going down with the closed gates of the puja is Star Cement's Rs 5 crore.

In a bid to increase its foothold in eastern India's infrastructure market, Star Cement, exclusive sponsors for the puja, had been running a teaser campaign for the past six months.

Designed by ad agency JWT, close to 1,000 hoardings across West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Jharkhand and Bihar talked about the 80-ft idol.

The idol is made with cement and fiberglass and not from traditional clay due to its unprecedented height, the organisers said.

"Despite being a gigantic structure, the deity retained all the features of a traditional Durga idol and there was no compromise in aesthetic and devotional aspects," sculptor Mintu Pal said.

The world's biggest Durga may soon enter Guinness Book of World Records.

On Sunday evening, the puja was shut down for the season by Kolkata Police following a stampede-like situation that left several people injured and south Kolkata crippled for almost a day. The police lodged an FIR against the organising committee for violating orders from the...

Lovely❤ Deshapriya Park, nestled in South Kolkata's Ballygunge area, is a vibrant public space that seamlessly blends recreation, culture, and community spirit. Named after freedom fighter Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, the park features expansive green lawns, well-maintained walking paths, and dedicated play areas, making it a favored spot for morning joggers, families, and sports enthusiasts alike. Facilities for cricket, football, and basketball are regularly utilized by both amateur and professional players.

A hallmark of Deshapriya Park is its grand Durga Puja celebrations, a tradition since 1938. The park transforms into a cultural epicenter during the festival, hosting elaborate pandals and attracting visitors from across the city. Notably, in 2015, it featured an 88-foot-tall Durga idol—the tallest in the world at the time—crafted by artist Mintu Pal. Subsequent years have seen equally impressive themes, such as the "Hazaar Haat" (Thousand Hands) Durga in 2016, showcasing the community's dedication to artistic excellence.

Beyond festivities, the park houses the Bhasha Smritistambha, a memorial dedicated to Bengali language authors and martyrs of language movements in Dhaka and Silchar. Its proximity to landmarks like Priya Cinema and various eateries enhances its appeal, offering visitors a blend of leisure and cultural experiences.

Open daily from early morning until late evening, Deshapriya Park offers free entry to all. Whether you're seeking a peaceful stroll, engaging in sports, or immersing yourself in Kolkata's rich cultural tapestry, Deshapriya Park stands as a testament to the city's...
