Yauatcha Kolkata The only restaurant in kolkata with a name you can't pronounce easily But the Desert they serve is really a delight
The fifth floor at Quest Mall, Kolkata welcomes yet another gastronomical pit-stop for all its patrons. Make way for the Michelin Starred Yauatcha. Named after its brand creator Alan Yau, Yauatcha translates to 'Yau having tea' - little surprise then that this London eatery, which has already taken Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi by storm, found its way to our tea loving city. The Michelin starred dim sum-heavy restaurant is sure to take Kolkata on a gastronomic treat.A fairly expansive space - this outpost boasts of dedicated outdoor seating complete with an alfresco bar and kitchen along with an additional 100-seater dining indoors. The tables are neatly decorated with amoeba shaped ceramic plates and rosewood chopsticks. If you are one of those who are clueless about using a chopstick, just ask for basic cutlery and the staff will oblige. In keeping with its other Indian outposts, the quality of food and service here is excellent as well. With four different menus boasting of over 50 types of dim sum and dumplings, come prepared to be spoilt for choice. Vegetarians also get a special Jain menu to indulge in!Being primarily a tea house, patrons can indulge in around 21 different teas here, imported straight from China and London. Pair your brew with Chicken Wrapped in Pak Choi (Rs 275) that not only looks too adorable to eat but also packs in melt-in-your-mouth flavours, or the Vegetable Crystal Dumpling (Rs 195) that comes stuffed with exotic vegetables and mushroom fungi wrapped in potato starch flour. Their signature Truffle Edamame Dumpling (Rs 495) is a must try that should be part of every meal here.Don't leave without desserts. The Jasmine Tea Cake (Rs 300), the assorted Macarons (Rs 350 for a box of six) and the Raspberry Delice (Rs 300) are all winners here, but our vote goes to the latter for its indulgent raspberry dark chocolate with hazelnut brownie and raspberry ripple ice-cream. If budgets are your concern, opt for their set meal menus at Rs 898 for vegetarians and Rs 998 for the non-vegetarians, which ensure you get a taste of luxury without...

Read moreMy first authentic dim sum and traditional Chinese food in Kolkata - and can’t wait to go back.
Being in the New York area we are intimately familiar with the dim sum experience - dumplings, gyozas, baos, small plates. The Kolkata Chinese scene was very different until now - most of the places are either entirely dedicated to Kolkata-style Chinese or Indo-Chinese, or at least mostly leaning towards these.
Yaoatcha is my first find of an authentic dim sum experience and I can’t stop raving about it. In fact I’d say the sanitized selection of options is better than the ones in NY / Boston / DC Chinatowns as the strong, stinky options that are difficult for the Indian palate are excluded.
Our table of 9 ordered a double order of the non-veg mixed dim sums, and then a handful of the lamb, bao, chicken, and sticky rice. We devoured them! Quick warning - the sticky rice portion sizes are much larger, say 3 times the volume of food compared to one order of lamb rolls.
We moved to a light order of the main courses - chicken fried rice, Hakka noodles, braised chicken, chicken Malhaka, spicy prawn with vegetables. Main courses had a touch of the Indo-Chinese flavors.
Desserts - wow! This is where having the international roots and the Kolkata setting likely helped, as Chinese in general, and dim sum places in particular, rarely have dessert beyond the handful of options that are somewhat weird to the Indian palate - bean paste, egg custard, and such.
Yauatcha’s dessert options are to die for. We went with the grand platter as we were not able to decide. It - well - vaporized. We went with another grand platter, and this one was consumed at a more sustainable pace. The chocolate mouse, pecan / tiramisu bar, raspberry cake, pebble, and the assortment of macaroons were all spectacular, closer to a French bakery standards than Chinese.
Oh - the drinks were great, too! We tried some funky options with ginger and tea and such, lychee martinis, fresh lime and sodas, and a few of my favorite Aperol spritzes.
If that was too long, and you skipped to the end - please, just get here. Prices are comparable to ITC / JW Marriot / Novotel, and the food is...
