I had heard about and seen youtube videos of Khanaval restaurant run by a maharashtrian couple, Greeshma and Kaustubh, thousands of miles away from their homeland in the land of high passes, Leh-Ladhak. Out of curiosity and excitement, I got an opportunity to visit Khanaval restaurant during my visit to Ladhak. The restaurant is situated in the heart of Leh city market and serves authentic Maharashtrian home made delicacies which you may not get to relish elsewhere outside a Maharashtrian home. Khanaval as a warm ambience with the red colour on the walls invoking vibrant energy and miniatures showcasing the rich cultural traditions and heritage of Maharashtra. There are two sitting arrangements, one the traditional low level pangat style to sit with folded legs and the other with high tables and chairs. We ordered Veg. Thali, Chicken thali, sabudana vada, kaanda bhaji, vada paav and kokam sarbat. The food was delicious and cooked from fresh ingredients tasting similar to home made preparation. The spices and condiments were well balanced to give distinct flavours. The thalis were unlimited with generous fillings. To name a few of their flagship delicacies are vada paav, misal paav, kaanda bhaji, batata bhaji, sabudana vada which are a must try alongwith other items worth relishing. The couple, Greeshma and Kaustubh ensured that we were well taken care of and the staff were very courteous to attend to our needs. The couple has received accolades and recognition from various sectors of the society for their great initiative to spread Maharashtrian cuisine thousands of miles away from home. One visit to Khanaval is not enough to taste the flavours of Maharashtra and you need to visit again and again to treat your taste buds. If you are in Leh, your trip is not complete without visiting Khanaval. As Ladhak is the land of high mountain passes, so is Khanaval a place for exotic...

Read moreI stumbled upon this Maharashtrian restaurant during a work trip to Leh and ended up eating here three times. Each time, I ordered the chicken mini thali—and it truly reminded me of a comforting Sunday chicken meal at home. The portion size was just right—enough to feel satisfied without being overwhelming. The food was fresh, wholesome, and free of unnecessary additives, which I really appreciated as someone who’s usually cautious about eating out while traveling. The spice level of the chicken was just right to gratify your taste buds and not burn your mouth and stomach.
The staff was warm and attentive, and the menu had plenty of options for vegetarians and gluten-free and vegan people as well. Their breakfast menu looked especially tempting—poha and kanda bhaji seemed to be crowd favorites, judging by how many people ordered them.
A big applause to the owner for bringing authentic Maharashtrian cuisine all the way to Ladakh. If you’re in Leh and craving delicious, home-style meals, this place is...
