Read moreOn a rainy day when your soul (stomach) craves for a kind of food which takes you back to your childhood days, a place where you can reminisce the good times that you may have spent with your family and friends over lunch or dinner - then come to Kunverbai’s Kitchen. Staying in Dombivli, Thane, it is very convenient for us to do a day trip to Lonavala. Especially during monsoon we make it a point to go to Lonavala at least a couple of times. On one such occasion while we were looking for a good place to have lunch we came across this board on the main road while entering in Lonavala through Khandala, immediate lane after Utopia resort. We were hungry and did not want to eat non-veg food and hence were excited to see this place. It is a very unassuming and peaceful place where we discovered this treasure trove. You can feel the warmth and love as you enter the place as Mr. Shah and Ms. Chandni welcome you. Since it is a home turned to a eatery ( I do not want to call it a restaurant) you may have to take a couple of minutes to settle down and soak in the underlying grandeur of the place. Artefacts of good old days, which we may have seen in ancestral Gujarati homes, are a plenty over here. The real thing begins once you are invited to start the lunch. During our first visit we were served food on the table. This time it was a buffet. The moment a guest walks in the Kitchen team begins their cooking. Piping hot phulkas with ghee spread over it, start coming out of the kitchen and the whiff of farsan being made, tempts you to dig in. Yesterday, we - me, wife and son, had lunch here and it was once again as blissful as always. The menu was simple yet filling (fulfilling). 2 veg gravies, 1 paneer gravy, dal, rice, 2 different sweets, 2 farsan, fresh salad, papad, pickle, buttermilk and not to forget the loads and loads of love and bliss. All the items are fresh and authentic in taste - authentically gujarati in taste. I am sure if you try to compare the taste of the food with any other thali restaurant, you would rate this much higher. There are vintage cars that you see and a huge collection of books. Also dont miss the good old swing at the center of the room - a common thing in a typical Gujarati ancestral homes. A must visit place...

Gujarati Thali

Today I'm travelling from Mumbai to Pune & in between I plan to stop for lunch at Lonavala. Last night's googling hours took me to Kunverbai's Kitchen, a 160 year old heritage home belonging to a Gujarati family. A portion of this beautiful building is used as a restaurant while the remaining half is still the living residence of the owners. The restaurant is 4 years old.
I called them in the morning just to find out just in case they are closed. I entered inside & I think the lady at the counter insisted I took a table at the hallway instead of the beautiful room. The hallway was still fascinating enough with the indoor jhola. The ambience had a warmth that took me back to the 1840s.
I was eating all alone. I asked for the menu & was told that they only had 1 thing & that was Gujarati Thalis. Yes I know I'm in Maharashtra but I still figured that the food from western India would still be a good try. Did I get it right? Anyway this my 1st ever proper Gujarati Thali.
5 mins later I was served. The thali had 14 items, Rice, Sweet Dal, Ghee Roti, Puri, Mattar Paneer, Patta Gobhi, Aloo Tamatar, Anjeer Halwa, Sewaiyan, Chaat, Dhokla, Salad, Papad & Buttermilk & each dish was unlimited.
The food was light, homely, less on spices yet very flavorful that I didn't realise I had put in 8 rotis 4 Pooris a small portion of rice, 5 refills of the Punjabi styled mattar paneer & 3 refills of the patta gobhi.
The lady owner seemed busy at first but slowly opened up to explain the dishes when the food arrived. The waiter was a gem of a guy.
This to me was definitely worth the 350 bucks & was such a wonderful Gujarati Thali experience.
