Jiva veg restaurant- pure vegetarian — Restaurant in Meghalaya

Veg food and in Shillong - Jiva chain of restaurants is the place to be. Situated in police bazaar, the main commercial area of Shillong, this is definitely a place to visit for all tourists who have been bored to death by Maggi or are pure Veg.

The Good It's a south Indian centre where other types of food is also available but it caters predominantly to your hunger of dosas! We ordered a lot - Masala dosa, Jiva special dosa, Jini dosa, chocolate dosa, schezwan dosa .... Service is prompt and delivery is fast. Food quality is good though you can desist from chocolate dosa and spring rolls. Location is police bazaar, so you can shop pre and post meals. The ambience is ok though a bit claustrophobic!

The Bad Service offered without a smile - that's typical Meghalaya. It seems they just don't like Indian tourists! In fact when we had mangoes from a street vendor, she was all smiles and willing to talk but the educated ones just dislike or maybe that's the feeling our group got. There is also a Non-veg chinese joint at the basement and this is where the washrooms are located. So a bit inconvenient.

Oh, what can I say? This is by far the best South Indian food in Shillong. We certainly didn't try all of their fare, but what we did have was so good that we ordered it twice! And coming from the south, I can still say that this was the best masala dosa I've had in my life - no exaggeration. The aloo masala had a depth and balance to the flavour that was perfect, and combined with the sambar it was divine. The chutneys also had so much depth - not just some more and more spices, but really knowing how to make the true flavour shine. It was an unexpected treat, the best part of our day, to find such delicious southern food here. And a word to the management and the service staff - everything was set up well, the servers came exactly when they should and were very attentive and professional.
