This is a South Indian restaurant in Police Bazaar. Possibly, the only one serving authentic Dosas & such in Shillong. We went in on a Sunday morning & had to wait 15 minutes for a table. The restaurant is on the first & second floors, but the second floor was not yet ready to receive customers, leading to our wait. The place is well laid out, although the entrance is small & gives you a wrong impression of the place.
We had masala dosas (@159/-) & Sambar vada (@149/-). The Dosas were good with the red chutney & the pudina chutneys being good. The sambar was not good, as per me, but then sambar's vary from State to State and theirs no common standard for the same! The vada tasted of oil, but had the same sambar & chutneys as accompaniments.
The ambience was good. The wash area was clean with soap & a tissue dispenser. The water was hot. Didn't get to use the toilet though.
Met the owners who set up the place, almost thirty years ago. Surely a smart move, considering...
Read moreHow difficult is it to understand Masala Dosa and Masala Kulcha? I came to Madras cafe keeping in mind I will have Dosa. So, when I placed the order with the lady(who seems to be a manager) masala dosa. When the order came I was shocked to see it was Masala Kulcha. When spoke to the lady about the order she refutes it and told me I ordered masala kulcha. She was not apologetic at all rather she was rude saying she can't do anything about that. The worst part is the lady didn't have clear pronunciation and she was putting her mistake in my mouth. So, I told her the reason I came to Madras Cafe is just to have Dosa still she denies it and told me I order Masala Kulcha. So, I knew it was pointless arguing with the lady so I asked her to pack that Masala Kulcha and get me Masala Dosa. The service is not satisfactory, I would recommend anyone coming here to double repeat the order and also to listen to the lady's pronunciation. Her...
Read moreSo, as I reached from guwahati to shillong (police bazar) I started to feel hungry as I took the taxi in the morning, slept throughout the journey due to traveling. Anyways, as I'm vegetarian I saw the banner as" Madras Cafe" I immediately went inside without thinking twice. I ordered rava dosa and to be honest, I've been to many restaurants or food stall for dosa as it's my top beloved meal. The taste of the rava dosa was very balanced nor too spicy sambar nor too light, the way it should be. And another thing, I was having trouble as I was new to shillong and wanted to visit cherrapunji(sohra) but from police bazar there's no sharing cab go youve to pay ₹ 2500 minimum , so I asked the guy who was serving me the meal was very friendly person he immediately guided me how to a reach sohra, he told me go to "Anjali bus stand" And from there I took sharing cab only ₹200 got window seat. And the end he gave me dairy milk as...
