Read moreEven though I have lived in Delhi India most of my life, I don't live there any more. On my recent visit to Delhi, I visited Havemore with my wife and friends. Havemore is located just off Pandara Road, in a small local market which is famous for the eateries. The restaurants in the market have been there ever since I can remember and have been a favourite haunt of many Central Delhiites. The visit to Havemore now was like visiting the past. Being strictly vegetarian, we ordered vegetarian sheekh kababs, which for many is an oxymoron; how can kebabs be vegetarian? But these ones were really delicious-good mix of veggies and little cottage cheese, neither under cooked nor burnt, served hot and soft, tad bit spicy and a very substantial portion. Four of us could get our fill of starters in one portion. The colour and aroma of Paneer Tikka Masala was too tempting - ultra soft pieces of cottage cheese lighted cooked in the clay oven in well fried onions, ginger and tomatoes masala, with fragrant spices and fresh green coriander garnishing. The preparation had thickish gravy; not totally dry. The portion was large. Good for 4 people, with one other accompanying dish. Dal Makhani, chef's recommendation, was delicious. Even when I was full to the gills, I was tempted to have the spoons full dal plain. Well balanced flavour, no single spice overpowering another. The lentil and kidney beans were soft and blended well to give the dal a perfect consistency. My friends had some chicken in gravy dish and seemed very satisfied with their selection. The breads, tandoori rotis and lachha paratha were hot, soft and large in size. However, the breads appeared to be made of refined flour (maida) and hence were white, rather than brownish if they were made of whole wheat flour (atta). Some health conscious readers would disapprove of the breads, but the entire meal was not for the weight watchers. My meals are not complete without one or two desserts from the menu. The kulfi phalooda was a disappointment and the rice phirni was just ok. The kulfi and phirni were both bereft of dry fruits-almonds, cashews, kishmish and pistachio. No flavour of cardamom and only mild kewra. The kulfi had a powdery texture. Would not order these desserts again. The Rogan Josh, a Kashmiri delicacy, is a revelation with its tender mutton pieces simmering in a robust, spicy gravy. The flavors are bold yet balanced, creating a memorable taste sensation. Accompanying these dishes was a basket of assorted Indian breads - fluffy naan, crispy lachha paranthas, and soft tandoori rotis, each providing a unique texture and taste to complement the gravies. The breads, fresh from the tandoor, are perfect for scooping up the rich sauces and enjoying the full spectrum of flavors. For dessert, we indulged in the Phirni, a traditional rice pudding. Served in a small clay pot, the Phirni is creamy, lightly sweetened, and topped with a sprinkle of crushed nuts, offering a gentle, soothing end to a sumptuous meal.
