If you’re in Pondicherry and craving a burst of bold, authentic South Indian biryani flavors, Salem Biryani Hotel should be on your must-visit list. Located conveniently in the city, this modest yet vibrant spot offers a memorable food experience that truly stands out among the many eateries in the area.
The star of the menu is undoubtedly the biryani—rich in aroma, cooked with precision, and layered with flavors that hit all the right notes. The taste is simply wow. It’s the kind of dish that speaks of home-cooked warmth combined with the skill of a seasoned chef. The rice is perfectly cooked, and the spices are balanced without overpowering the natural taste of the meat.
However, the true showstopper for us was the Mutton Chukka. Tender, juicy chunks of mutton are slow-cooked to perfection, coated in a fiery, peppery masala that clings to every bite. It’s one of those rare dishes that lingers in your memory long after the meal is over. If you’re a fan of bold flavors and spicy South Indian-style meat, this dish alone is worth the visit.
The ambience is simple and functional, focusing more on quality food than fancy decor. The service is prompt, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Prices are reasonable, making it a great spot for both locals and tourists.

Read moreThis restaurant was suggested by some of my friends as one of the best restaurants for biryani in Pondy. Parking is a pain in the arse, so plan accordingly and park your vehicle somewhere else. The entrance looks like as if you're entering a 80's home (pretty old they say!). The restaurant itself is small - a maximum of 25-30 people can sit. Now coming to the main dish - the Biryani! They use seeraga samba rice for biryani which is actually good because it provides better taste than the traditional basmati rice. The price is slightly on the steeper side but the quality and the service they provide compensate for it. Overall a decent place to have a taste of Salem...
