Shree Balajee Mess, A Hidden Gem for Authentic Vegetarian and Vegan Delights in Puducherry Nestled in the heart of Puducherry, Shree Balajee Mess is a humble, traditional vegetarian restaurant that has been serving wholesome, home-style meals for years. Despite its unassuming, almost mediocre appearance, this small eatery is a haven for food lovers seeking authentic South Indian flavors with a touch of vegan-friendly options. Its central location makes it easily accessible, though parking can be a bit of a challenge due to the bustling surroundings. The must-try dishes here are the Dal Roti and Sambar Rice, both of which capture the essence of comfort food. The Dal Roti is a perfect blend of soft, freshly made rotis paired with a flavorful, mildly spiced lentil curry that feels like a warm hug. The Sambar Rice, a South Indian classic, is aromatic, tangy, and served with a generous helping of vegetables, making it both hearty and healthy. Vegan options are seamlessly integrated, ensuring everyone can enjoy the wholesome goodness. Don’t miss the buttermilk, a refreshing, perfectly spiced drink that complements the meal. However, it’s advisable to bring your own bottled water, as the restaurant offers only local water bottles, which may not suit all preferences. Though no cozy ambiance but focus on fresh, home-cooked food make Shree Balajee Mess a must-visit for those craving an authentic, budget-friendly dining experience in Puducherry. Highly recommended for a...
Read moreFamous for North Indian meals with Chapathi, Paroto, Naan etc. I am a customer of this restaurant from 1978 if I remember the year rightly. The original owner had sold the restaurant. It used to be great in the olden days. With lot of side dishes - Allo subji, Dal, one more gravy, side dish of seasonal vegetable and three variety of pickles (Mango, Green chilli, Lemon), raitha - onion, tomato and cucumber with curd and ofcourse unlimited Chapathi and rice. All the above are for a price of Rs.10/- per plate. Now the North Indian Thalli is Rs. 100/-. Even though the taste is not comparable to the olden days, still it's good. They have two gravies and raitha - onion and cucumber. Unlimited Chapathi, rice for Rs. 100/-. Service is okay. If you want to enjoy eating, you have to order extra side dishes. Aloo fry for Rs. 60/- per plate was excellent. They have Allo palak, Panner dishes, Bhindi masala etc. Rates are very reasonable. Variety of stuffed Chapathi, Paroto are...
Read moreThis review is purely based on food taste and quality. We were a bit skeptical after seeing the photos but I'm glad that we visited it. If you are looking for north Indian/Rajasthani food, this is the place you should visit. We ordered two Thali which costed 150/- each. The food was yum and had authentic Rajasthani taste. Owner and servers were also from Rajasthan and it was pleasant to talk to him. The ambience is a bit sub standard but it's located in busy Market and space is a luxury there. Price wise very pocket friendly. Parking will be a problem and you will have to park on the road sides in adjacent Streets. Mind the one-sided roads, Google map might show some outdated path as the traffic police have put boards of one-way only. So be extra vigilant of such boards. Overall, go for it if you are carving for North Indian food in...
