Bedekar Misal, Pune's very special, a well known, Brahmani Misal. Unlike a lot of the regular Misals you would've had elsewhere, this is very very different. They say it's very much tastes homemade, sweet and spicy, which is true to their words. You can actually taste the sweetness from the Misal.
Food : 5/5 - This is a Misal and Bread place unlike other places they serve with Pav. It's debatable whether bread or pav goes well with Misal. But I don't think that should make any difference, infact Misal's like that of Bedekar goes well with Bread and not Pav. The sweetness of this Misal along with some spicy Katt and Bread is a bomb combination. I was actually a little surprised and infact my expectations dropped for a moment initially when I had my first few bites of the Misal, it was sweet, my head wasn't ready to accept the sweetness. But after a while I was able to acquire the true taste and it made all sense.
Service : 5/5 - A typical Puneri restaurant 😁. But they've kept it very well organised. When we reached the place we were in the waiting, they took down our names kindly and ensured the queue system. They'll call out your name and a table will be given for you. It's Self service, you first need to go to the counter, you share your order and the receptionist notes down on a large piece of paper. He'll hand you a token and ask us to hand it to the person in the kitchen. They will share the plates with just the Misal and Bread, the Katt will be served at your table. Service is quick, infact they'll already be waiting for you to finish quickly as the queue gets longer. If you wish to make the Misal more spicy on request they will give you a Katt which has the spicy version. Once done you will need to go back to the receptionist to clear the dues.
Ambience : 5/5 - The place is surprisingly small and not very big, but it's enough to accommodate atleast 20-30 people in one go. Place is old but they've maintained it. Kitchens are clean, clean utensils. I guess all of it makes this place more recommended and likable.
Overall : 5/5 - So for those folks who'd like to have the typical spicy Misal's and don't prefer sweetness, this ain't your place, you'll probably visit only once. For all these folks, Katakirr will the place to go. Foodies like me who are flexible, could get acquired to this taste, you'll...
Read moreA Timeless Taste of Pune: My Experience at Bedekar Misal Visiting Bedekar Misal in Narayan Peth is less about just eating and more about a culinary pilgrimage. From the moment you step into the modest, bustling space, you can feel the history and tradition that has made this place a landmark for generations. The true star, of course, is the misal itself. Unlike the fiery red, oil-heavy misals you find elsewhere, Bedekar's version is a masterpiece of balanced flavors. The tarri (spicy gravy) is the perfect golden-orange hue, with a warmth that builds gently rather than assaulting your palate. It's not just about heat; it's about a complex blend of spices that leaves a satisfying, lingering taste. The misal is served with an impeccable ensemble: The Farsan: A generous portion of a unique, house-made farsan that provides a delightful crunch without being greasy. The Bread: Two perfectly soft and fresh slices of bread that are ideal for soaking up the delicious tarri. The Potato Sabji: A small, delightful portion of mildly spiced potato curry that adds a wonderful textural and flavor contrast. What truly elevates the experience is the way it's served. The misal comes in a thali, with the tarri, farsan, and potato sabji separate, allowing you to mix and match to your liking. The sweet, creamy buttermilk (taak with additional cost) served alongside is the ideal companion, a cool and refreshing counterpoint to the spice. The service is swift and no-nonsense, a testament to decades of efficiency. The staff are quick to take your order and serve your food, ensuring a seamless experience even during peak hours. The cleanliness and simple, functional seating add to the charm of a place that prioritizes substance over style. Bedekar Misal is more than just food; it’s an experience that connects you to the heart of Pune's culinary heritage. It’s the perfect place for a hearty, traditional breakfast or lunch that will leave you feeling completely satisfied. A must-visit for anyone who wants to taste the authentic flavors...
Read moreHeritage of Pune. Visiting the place since 1970. The standard never slipped a bit. The taste is just superb as always. The entire attitude of Pune can be experienced by visiting it once. 1. Ambience is never changed in last 45 years. 2. They never expanded the business beyond a dingy place accommodating hardly 15 small cozy tables. 3. They never had any branches or franchise. 4. They never trust customers. You got to deposit money at cash counter first. So mean, just like a typical Puneite. 5. Self service for first serving. Why, bloody why? 6. Wait for 15m. to 60 m. to get a corner seat on already occupied table. Nonsense. 7. The entire place is so crammed with customers, waiters, cashiers, servers, cleaners, that you just prey God to have peace around. But He never answers. 8. Cooking and plate cleaning happens just before eyes. Unless you close them, you can't enjoy food.
Now despite of all the odds, still the visit is worth. Afterall it's a pilgrimage site for foodies and connoisseurs of food. A tour of Pune cannot be complete without savouring the misal. Few suggestions, though sure that owners would never listen. Give Ladi pav instead of slice. 2. Shift it to a min. 4000 sf AC hall with decent ambience. We are ashamed to invite guests here. 3. Stop self service.
But I am sure after reading the review, Bedekars would say, " घ्यायचं तर घ्या, आम्ही आमंत्रण दिलं नव्हतं. ". (Take it or leave. We never invited you).
This is the typical attitude of Pune. Bedekars is the epitome of...
