Read moreI have taken several friends to dinner at Chafa, and usually come away satisfied. I feel it is one of the nicer, less hyped places in KP, which while still being on the expensive side, made up for it with nice ambience and decent food. Last night's experience, however, has made me write this review, and question whether I would return there in a very long time. I was there with a friend and I had to walk to the counter to get the attention of the staff. They are courteous but need to be trained to attend to guests and not leave them waiting to give their orders. We ordered two mains and a starter. A little later we ordered two lemonades. My friend's main came first. So he had to start eating while I watched. He said that the dish (Asian Wholesome Tofu Bowl) was just ok. In retrospect, I now think that this dish was incorrectly instructed by the waiter to the kitchen. It was incorrectly instructed as being needed to be jain. I had ordered the other two dishes to be jain (no onion, no garlic) and it seems the waiter simply ordered all three dishes as jain, even though he was told specifically what was jain and what wasn't. The mains arrived with two side plates. The top one had bread crumbs on it, which were clearly visible but the waiter did not notice. The starter came next and was fine. I order it almost everytime I visit. The ciabata sandwich I ordered took a long time to come and was bready and very disappointing. It was also 'wet' at the base from the mozzarella. I should have pointed it out and returned the dish. The soda lemonades never arrived. I had to go to the counter again to ask for the bill as the staff seemed harried and unattentive. No one checked on us asking how the food was or if we wanted dessert. While paying, one of the staff behind the counter said that they would make the lemonades now and not charge us. I thanked him but refused. I asked for a peanut butter chocolate bar instead as it is always nice. My friend enjoyed it but I now regret not paying for it. I had asked for the physical menu and noticed the prices had been increased. The tofu bowl and the sandwich simply do not justify the price charged and were both low on value just talking about the food. Throw the poor overall experience in and this rates as one of the more disappointing dinner experiences in KP. As a resonably regular customer at Chafa over the years, and one who would like to continue to visit with friends and family, I hope they go back to the standard expected of what is now a completely overpriced menu and poor service. 'Success' seems to have caught up with them, and not in a good way. Lose your regular customers and you lose the unheralded but valuable word of mouth...
Read moreChafa Cafe and Studio....Ladies and Gentlemen! Named after the most common yet effervescent flowering plant Chafa AKA Plumeria/ Frangipani/ Lei/ Chompa, the cafe has withstood the test of time- no wonder it is one of the most popular social rendezvous in Koregaon Park! They have a subtle yet cute indoor wooden themed setting with green framed fenestra which I find adorable; as well as alfresco dining in the porch which is more of cottage rustic themed decor and furniture with a modern take, nestled right under the watchful leaves of the Chafa! First on my list is the archetypal Activated Whole Wheat Charcoal Bun Chicken Burger- strikingly TDH handsome, with melt in your mouth cheddar cheese, sriracha sauce, sides of pickled beetroot strings and sweet potato chips fried in healthy coconut oil- brilliant! Arabian Bowl- Hummus, the quintessential Middle Eastern/ Mediteranean dip in three avatars- beetroot, spinach-parsley and traditional with a sprinkle of chopped olives and a generous dash of olive oil; served with whole wheat charcoal crisps and falafel-finger food size fried patties made of chickpeas and fava beans. Asian Soba Noodle Bowl- this is a broth soupy noodle bowl with the staple Korean kimchi pickle salad, fresh bok choy, shitake mushrooms, white button mushrooms, broccoli, carrots, beansprouts all in a brown broth with buckwheat noodles or the Japanese- 'Soba'. Topped with a sunny side up. Thai Glass Noodles with diced chicken- Thai vegetable starch based glass noodles or woon sen tossed in Thai flavours, with notes of galangal, lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves, fresh veggies, diced chicken, red cabbage with a strew of sesame and a side dip of Thai sweet chilli sauce. Magnificent feast for the eyes! For dessert they recommended Almond Lemon Ricotta Cake- made with almond flour, raw sugar and dusting of almonds cream with toasted crispy almond...
