If you are pressed for time and don't want to read ahead, in short - AVOID AT ALL COST. This restaurant will ruin your Udaipur stay and will leave a bad taste in your mouth. The food is average, the service terrible and the prices equal to that of a 4-Star restaurant. Now, if you want to know why I'm saying this, read ahead.
We were visiting Udaipur with parents and kids for the first time and were having the most wonderful experience. Everyone everywhere was extremely hospitable and friendly.. pretty much what we heard about Rajasthan and Udaipur was true.
We had food at Trident and Khamma Ghani and both experiences were top notch, in terms of the professional service and the food itself.
Now, we had heard and read about a restaurant called 1559 AD and it was on our list of restaurants to visit. So we did on fine Saturday evening. What ensued was a terrible experience.
The entrance is dimly lit and there's no one there to guide or welcome you into the restaurant. There was outdoor seating that we passed and then entered the the air-conditioned dining area inside. After being seated the first shocker was the BATHROOM. It's the first time in a while that I smelled AMMONIA!!
After bringing in the appetizers and NOT serving it for us, the waiter casually picks up my plate without asking me and moves on. Mind you, we had more appetizers on the way, which he knew. When asked, he said I'll change the plate.. and got a smaller quarter plate. My son was eating a pizza and wasn't done with his food and he changed his plate as well. When I asked him about that, he just shuffled the small plate next to him to my sons?!
Weirder things followed. One of the waiters started serving a Murg dish stating that it is Jungli Maas. When I told him it is not chicken, he was shocked and asked another waiter who confirmed the same. By then he had served that dish to 3 folks from my party of 10. Shambles.
While serving my son who incidently at that moment shuffled, the waiter thought it was right to glare at my son! Wow!
The aubergine masala that we ordered was undercooked. The murg/chicken dish that we had was boiled chicken in curry - no taste whatsoever. The jungli-maas was barely ok. The daal was worse than a roadside vendor daal. Reshmi kabab was like a regular kabab. Funny thing was, when we asked them what is different between a jungli maas and laal maas they couldn't explain it. We realized later that they couldnt identify chicken from maas.
Anyway, we hurried up finished and got out of there as fast as we could. I would advise to spread the word and stop going to this hell hole of a place that charges a bomb for the pathetic service and...
Read moreAs the name says for itself , building of this hotel n restaurant was made in 1559 AD. It is situated at the banks of Fatehpur Sagar lake . It has a beautiful entrance garden with flowers , trees nd manicured grass and plants. The entrance path has some sand statues of rajasthan old tradition men nd women. Though it was a hot humid afternoon , but v still preferred to sit at the outside dinning cuz we were getting this cool air from the fan , and I was like amazed and surprised fr once and on asking got to know the reason for this cool air in such a hot afternoon was the architecture of the building. Being new to the place , we asked the waiter only to suggest the food frm the menu fr us , and he served us Laal Maas , Gatta Kadi , garlic naan , nd missi roti , all of them r the specialty of rajasthan. The presentation and taste of the food was delicious . Only that I was expecting Laal Maas to be a bit spicy , else I enjoyed every bite of the food. We also ordered , on their suggestion only , their speciality dessert ( I hv forgotten it's name ), but it's mentioned in the menu as a speciality . It's an ice cream dessert though. It was too , so amazingly delicious , m like salvating right now while writing about it. Lol! Since we sat outside , won't write much about the interiors , since I had only glance of it while going to the restroom , which was so clean , fragrant and spacious . Ya only one thing I can say that they hv kept the interior look of 1559 AD only with a touch of modernization . So overall ,my experience with 1559 AD was really good and we came out really impressed , so much , that we tipped the waiter a good 500 bucks for serving us the delicious delicacy frm the menu. A...
Read moreThis is a non vegetarian's heaven in udaipur.. beautiful rustic look with a peaceful and antique ambience... Can easily visit during the pandemic too since they take extra care of masks, sanitization and social distancing... Though their service is a bit slow(since crowded mostly) but their foods are worth waiting a bit... I have tried their grill salmon & grilled fish(probably basa) in lemon butter sauce & grilled chicken in mushroom sauce: good quality fish and chicken beautifully grilled but moist and tender from inside, the saute veggies are cooked just the right amount so that they are still crunchy but not raw and had a lovely butter and pepper flavour and each sauce has it's own unique flavour which you just can't stop having Chicken thai curry: Thai curry was a bit extra tangy which kind of overshadowed the actual coconutty thai curry flavour... Golden fried prawns: This was the best prawn I had in a long time(since i am currently located in Ahmedabad).. large fresh water prawn are lightly coated with a mild flavoured batter and fried till they turn golden... served with a minty dip and a sweet chilly dip... You can taste the lovely sweet prawn along with the crunchy coating in every bite... When in here give this prawn a try and you would definitely thank me.. they are soooo good... In dessert section we have tried their Cream Caramel: It was a normal caramel custard with carmel sauce... Not too sweet and a bit bitter tint of the caramel which is lovely and would compliment you lunch or dinner perfectly.. I always visit this place every time I am in udaipur and would recommend everyone reading to definitely give it a try.... PS: I was so busy eating forgot to take pictures...
