Food: Rice crackers - Oh WOW!! Perfect snack to start the meal with, very crispy, and with the 2 dips (One thick and spicy, the other watery and sweet) this was on-demand 🤩
Tom yum soup - Spicy and strong chicken soup with so good lemongrass flavors (topped with kaffir leaves); the signature Thai flavor was amazing but the meat was mediocre 😌
Gomai - Supposed to be sweet spinach salad but this was celery; crunchy and seasoned well with sesame dressing, GOOD 🤔
Chicken satay - Not the best and had high expectations of a Satay; the umami flavor was saturated well inside the meat, juicy but the meat was not cooked to perfection, MEH 🙄
Bite-size corn fritter balls - SO DAMN GOOD!! Crunchy on the outside while soft on the inside, the oriental sauce with it was spot-on as it elevated the sour flavor along every bite 😍
Tofu lantern chili and peanuts - The best tofu which was freaking soft and just melts in your mouth (braised in Chinese wine so the natural umami kick); tossed and sautéed very well in chilies and peanuts; EXTRAORDINARY flavor 🤗
Chicken fried in dried red chili and garlic - Similar to the tofu but this one had a strong fragrance to it from the burnt garlic & spice; the meat was well cooked which went great with the spicy peri-peri dip, similar to a popcorn snack 😄
Miso broth Ramen bowl - Japanese style soft ramen in soybeans & rice broth, topped with veggies and smooth silken tofu; very strong umami taste with the soy aroma dominating all around, not sure why it was a cold noodle but the broth added good spice to the bowl 👌
Fried rice with Thai yellow chicken curry - Very disappointing fried rice with a stench smell to it. But, the Thai yellow curry was the best I had in recent times; sweet from the coconut and strong from the lemongrass; fragrant from the basil, this had well-marinated and perfectly cooked chicken, WOWOW Curry 😘😘
Hakka noodles with stir-fried vegetables (with crunchy almonds) - Stir-fried noodles tossed in Hakka sauce and loads of veggies (or meat). Yet again, the meat was a disappointment since it was hard in spots and wasn't cooked to perfection 😑 The gravy was soupy and very well done with exotic veggies and strong garlic, soy sauce, and crunchy almonds, It's an INTERESTING combo!!! 🙌
Coconut and palm sugar ice cream - YAYYYYY taste with evident coconut texture and sugar kick; soft, no crystallizations, melts slow but hits hard on flavors, GOOD!! ☺️
Ambiance/ Price: Their ambiance is always positive for them since they are decorated with native paintings and embellishments all across the place. Their service was spot on with quick attention to detail and were courteous enough to take feedback for their dishes which didn't strike home-run. Table booking is recommended but we went on a weekday, was empty and the walk-in did well. Valet parking is available with decent parking space underneath. When it comes to the price part, they are quite expensive and one might re-think the prices for individual dishes. So, I'd recommend trying out their buffet where you get to try all their assortment under one standard menu (Card offers from various banks...
Read moreTLDR; Worth a revisit. I keep coming back only for the cumin lamb and the dim sum. Looking forward to trying their other meat dishes. Please make reservations to avoid wait time. Also, check to see if the non-veg dim sum platter and the cumin lamb are available. The soups are average at best. The rice and noodle dishes are a hard pass. Have tried several noodle and rice dishes and almost all of them are heavy on the soy sauce and sweet like they are doused in ketchup.
5/5 - Cumin Lamb. We came when the cumin lamb had been newly added and they'd asked for feedback. I'd indicated how it could be improved. The first time the meat was a bit too tough and the cumin flavor needed to be more prominent. In Chennai, they use the mutton steak in several places, which is a tougher meat to cook. This cut is actually more expensive than the traditional cut of mutton used for cumin lamb in China. I highly prefer the softer and thinner traditional lamb cut. It cooks much faster as well. I was pleasantly surprised when I came back a few months later, that the waitstaff had passed the above feedback on to the chef. It came out with these improvements. It was delicious.
5/5 - Non veg dim sum - Hands down the best dimsum in Chennai. Well worth the higher price to try a variety of options. It allowed me to find a favorite that I otherwise would not have gone for. My favorite is the duck potsticker. Duck is a tough meat to handle. Most people undercook it and it tastes gamey. They cook it perfectly each time. I also like the bokchoy wrapped chicken. It is very soft. Overall the other items like the potstickers and prawn dim sum are good.
3.5/5 Laksa Tribute - They do say this is Laksa with a twist. It is decent but a bit too thin for my taste.
3/5 Khao Suey - Has too much coconut flavor and not enough curry.
2/5 Bali Bamie Noodles - Tastes sweet and like maggi ketchup. Hard pass.
2.5/5 Pan Fried noodles veg- Too much soy sauce. Also hard pass.
3/5 Soggy Basil fried rice - This was accidentally given instead, as I had ordered the Spicy Bangkok bowl. It is soggy as the name indicates. I'm not sure why one would want their fried rice to be soggy. Would not recommend and would not order again.
I'd only get the 6 piece duck potstickers if they actually had it as their menu states. For the past several times, they have had no lamb and no duck. What is up with restaurants not serving lamb and mutton? Many restaurants these days keep saying they don't have stock. I highly prefer mutton and lamb to chicken.
If the duck potstickers and the cumin lamb are not there, this place would not be worth a revisit for me. I always leave and go to a nearby restaurant if they don't have...
