I'll start with a complaint and end with compliments. The name is clever Mex It Up. But it makes you believe that it's all Mexican cuisine. And while tacos and burritos 🌯 are fine, they're not on our regular eat outs.
It's only when we walked in that we realised that the restaurant is quite big. And tastefully done up in pink and waves of glass patterns on the walls.
The atmosphere is young and an animated discussion on movies and life was going on between a group of young people at the next table.
The Vietnamese Coconut Coffee sounded unusual and it lived up to its promise. Sweet and deftly balanced between coffee and coconuts! It's like they alternated between the taste buds.
Then the Avocado 🥑 toast. Mushy with a hint of sweetness hidden away somewhere in the filling. It tasted fresh and crisp.
The Pistachio Paneer bites were generous. Floating in a gravy and the pistachios powdered and sprinkled over the paneer. Not a combination that you'd normally arrive at, but it went in a completely different direction from the regular paneer tikkas.
Then the main course was the Mixed Paneer Steak with herbed rice and vegetables. The paneer slices were seared, and the dish looked like it had gone through multiple experiments before the chef finally settled on what worked best. Quite filling as well.
Gayatri served us and she was helpful and attentive.
Like I said, the food was a surprise. And plated well, so a feast for the eyes as well.
Mex It Up needs to get its message out to older people. They may be harder to please, but they'll keep coming back for more, once they get there.
As far as the name goes, it looks like several options for the multi-cuisine spread were considered, and then, they...
Read moreSaw the insta post about this place in a friend's page..! Been on my bucket list ever since. Could manage my 1st visit in June. And my verdict --- this place will never disappoint. I am not a big fan of Mexican food, however this place changed "Mexican food" for me. The 1st thing that will impress anyone is the vibrant colors and art on the wall. The place albeit small gives you an elegant vibe. Everything is unique about this place, including the way in which we order. I must have had 2 of their hot chocolates, their fusion chat, their dostadas, and that fusion caesadilla.
I work in Delhi and I visit Chennai often for work. Last June -- I kid you not, I was at this restaurant for almost 5 hours straight. I was catching up with a friend after a long time and this place seemed the best to do that. 2 of my colleagues were flying in from Delhi on a later flight and because I was so impressed by their food, I actually asked them to come straight to this place from the airport. The 3 of us must have tried atleast 8 items amongst us that evening.
This is definitely a place everyone should visit once if you are in Chennai...!! 3 times I've been to Chennai, this place has been on my list. What impresses me the most is the colors and lights -- truly gives you a hip place feeling... Kudos to Kavya Varghese and the team for this concept..!!...
Read moreAmbiance and service are top notch!!! That was a single line complement, but it is one of the highest orders :)
It is a restaurant more in the premium price range when looked at from the cost vs quantity perspective.
We were warmly welcomed and we were introduced to the outlet’s concept of Indo-Mexican fusion by a courteous gentleman who also offered us some suggestions. One again- top notch service.
We had an authentic pani poori connoisseur with us and was a bit hesitant to order the pani pooris here, but the ‘fusion’ was well received by her :)
The guacamole and nachos were tasty, and the small portion sizes started slowly dawning upon us. The veg tiffin which had an assortment was a good one to try and taste some different items. The cheesy jalapeño samosas were worth a mention for sure!
Among the ice teas and juices, the watermelon paloma also deserves a special mention. Smooth watermelon juice which apparently had strawberry and chia seeds blended in it. It was the best of the 4 drinks we’d ordered.
Overall, for about 1.3k for the 4 of us on half tummies, it was a nice time spent here trying out what Mex it up had to offer and experiencing their warm service. Price the dishes any lower and I’d probably make it my go-to-place if I need to catch up with friends over some interesting...
