Oh, Mount Road Bilal! You are beautiful!
Yes, this place is excellent. Sure, it has a few areas which are wanting (such as their service) but I bet you won't find a better and more convenient place to head to for a late night meal that is 100% satisfying and easy on the pocket. It's open till 3am has 2 buildings. Smaller one outside is purely for tea, bun butter jam and some parcel items and the bigger one is the main restaurant built in two levels.
Location (5/5): It's located on Anna Salai itself and is SUPER CONVENIENT to reach. There are several cabs and auto-rickshaw available till late at night for your trip back home but I recommend booking through Ola or Uber to avoid getting ripped off.
Food (4.5/5): They have a biryani and kebabs concept with a few gravies thrown in but I highly recommend you stick to the basic few dishes
Mutton biryani (4.5/5): Excellent taste and good quality ingredients. This is a staple for a non vegetarian at this restaurant. It has the typical ginger-garlic-tomato taste associated with dum biryani found in Chennai and is low on spice while being high on flavour. The onion raita is the perfect accompaniment. Price is decent and each portion suffices for 1 person.
Mutton Seekh (4.5/5): This kebab is super flavourful and soft although it's quite thin. Must try with TURKISH NAAN.
Chicken Seekh (4/5): Super soft and succulent. It's made with yellow chilli and you can taste the saffron and pepper quite clearly. It's not spicy.
Tea (4.5/5): Hot, sweet and milky. Have it post your meal to wash everything down.
Bun butter Jam (3.5/5): It's a good accompaniment with the tea but I don't recommend it after a heavy meal.
Service (3.5/5): There are several stewards running around but the service is a bit slow. Staff is efficient but not very chatty. I had to remind them for a dish 2-3 times before it came. BUT, if you ask them for recommendations, they are usually spot on.
Price (5/5): Prices are very decent and priced at single portion rates mostly. A meal here will set you back around Rs 500 per head but it's totally worth it. The taste and quality Mount Road Bilal offers at the wee hours of the morning cannot be matched.
Overall, it's an Excellent restaurant serving tasty food. Although the place is frequently crowded, one does not have to wait long to get a table. KUDOS to them and it's definitely our late night...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of visiting Mount Road Bilal Restaurant on Anna Salai, and I must say that it was an incredible experience from start to finish. Although I visited specifically for their renowned Tea and bun butter jam, I left with memories that will last a lifetime.
The moment I stepped into the restaurant, I was greeted with warm smiles and impeccable service. The staff was attentive and made me feel right at home. Their friendly demeanor only added to the overall charm of the place.
Now, let's talk about the star of the show—the Tea and bun butter jam. The moment it arrived at my table, I knew I was in for a treat. The aroma of the perfectly brewed tea and the sight of the golden-brown buns topped with generous amounts of butter and jam were irresistible. With just one bite, I was transported to flavor heaven. The bun was soft and fluffy, complementing the rich and creamy butter and the sweet, fruity jam. It was a symphony of tastes that left me wanting more.
One of the highlights of this delightful experience was the rooftop seating area. The restaurant's rooftop offers a stunning view of Anna Salai, making it the perfect spot to enjoy your tea and bun butter jam. The combination of the delectable treats and the incredible cityscape created an ambiance that was both peaceful and invigorating. It's a unique feature that sets Mount Road Bilal Restaurant apart from others in the area.

I recently visited Bilal Mount Road on Anna Salai with my family, and it definitely lived up to its reputation. This iconic restaurant is famous for its Bun Butter Jam, and I can confidently give it a 5/5! The bun is super soft and spongy, generously filled with jam and butter—truly worth the hype.
We tried several dishes during our visit, including:
• Bun Butter Jam: 5/5 • Chicken 65: 5/5 • Chicken 99: 5/5 • Mutton Sheekh Kebab: 5/5 • Spicy Fried Rice: 4.5/5 • Mutton Biryani: 4/5 • Mutton Pepper: 4/5 • Mango Lassi: 6/5 (my absolute favorite!) • Sweet Lime Soda: 4/5 • Mango Milkshake: 4/5 • Chai: 5/5 • Dum Tea: 5/5 • Sulaymani Tea: 5/5
Every dish was flavorful, especially the biryani, which was tender and aromatic. Although I’m not usually a fan of Chennai-style biryani, I found this one to be quite exceptional. The Chicken 65 and Chicken 99 were highlights, bursting with flavor. The mutton Sheekh Kebab was also outstanding, earning a solid 5/5. And all their teas—especially the dum tea and sulaymani tea—are to die for!
The restaurant is a clean, hygienic, and convenient 2-storey establishment, featuring a rooftop area for standing. It’s a nice spot for a tea date with a city view or to chit-chat with friends, adding a lovely touch of luxury to the dining experience. However, as a coffee lover, I was disappointed to find that coffee wasn’t offered on the menu. A nice cup of coffee would have complemented the experience perfectly.
The ambiance is casual and comfortable, suitable for family dining, though it could be improved to match the quality of the food. Service can be hit or miss; while most staff are friendly, I encountered one who was a bit rude during peak hours. The high volume of customers can slow things down, so patience is key.
For more convenience, I recommend using auto services like Ola or Uber, especially for non-Indian customers like myself from Malaysia. Parking can be challenging due to the crowds, so this is a great option.
Overall, Bilal Mount Road is my absolute favorite place in Chennai. I’ll definitely return every time I’m...
