Panam Nagar is an abandoned historical city situated at Sonargaon, Narayanganj in Bangladesh. In the 15th century, it was the capital of then Bengal ruler Isa Khan, and boasted of being one of the busiest city in undivided Bengal. In the early 19th century during the colonial rule, more than thousands of wealthy Hindu and Muslim cotton merchants shifted to Panam Nagar to uplift their business. In fact, the development of the city was such impactful that the British East India Company established a factory to purchase muslin and other cotton fabrics from the merchants residing there. The business was flourishing, and Panam Nagar fast became the hub of trade.
But as the saying goes, what goes up definitely comes down. The downfall of Panam Nagar started from the 1947 Partition. As East India Company left the country, the business started to go downhill, and a lot of Hindu merchants decided to abandon the city. And the final nail in the coffin came with the 1965 Indo Pak War, where all the remaining Hindu merchants had to migrate away. Panam Nagar was later exposed to threats like vandalism, dacoity, illegal encroachment and trading, earthquake, and flooding. Gradually, the busy Panam Nagar became a deserted and abandoned Ghost Town.
To revive the memories of the bygone time, CAFE TREAT of HOTEL PRIDE PLAZA, New Town came up with a wonderful concept to dig and recover the golden foods from that era, which were fast fading away from our menu and memories just like the lost city.
