I've walked past this place countless times but never went in until last weekend, and I'm so glad that I did, because Vheto is a beautiful place.
The first thing that hits you is their beautiful verandah. Those Vespa-esque scooters, the big "haath pakhas", the potted plants, the wooden furniture, they all make the place look and feel so, so comforting. Vheto has absolutely nailed the aesthetic they were aiming for.
I preferred the outdoor seating to the indoor one. There's nothing wrong with the indoor seating, it just made more sense to spend a warm winter afternoon out in an easy chair than in stereotypical seats and tables. The only problem were the mosquitoes, though.
Coming to the food, I found it to be pricier, atleast accoring to Serampore standards. They have an exhaustive menu of Bengali cuisine, and they also had a special of the day. I wasn't much hungry, so I went for the "Bhetki Chingri Melbondhon", which seemed unique. It was a cutlet with a Bhetki and Prawn stuffing, and it tasted fresh, and delicious, and I would recommend it.
I walked into the place with little or no knowledge, and honestly, I was quite pleased with my overall experience. I will probably revisit this place because their menu had a few other things that I'd love to try, and also because I loved laying on that easy chair. If you're in the area, you should definitely visit Vheto. (It's a much better option than...

We ordered for Hookah. First thing which hit us was smelly water inside the hookah base. We requested the waiter to kindly change the base. The reply was, 'No one is complaining, what's your problem?' After lot of request they changed it but then the coal was too harsh. We asked them to atleast check once that the smoke wasn't coming properly. They simply said, 'Sorry, we don't do that here!'
Now we ordered for fish fry and chicken cutlet as starter. It was okayish.
We moved to main course for pulao, Mutton Kosha, plain rice & daab chingri. The pulao rice was not properly cooked, the daab chingri had no salt. We asked for some salt and it never came!
This happened when only one more table had guest. So it was quiet an empty day for them, and the food and the service explains quiet well the reason behind it.
Foods as per the quality is bit overly priced compared to quality and service. People who has given good reviews must try some actually good...
Read moreA quintessential Bengali restaurant built on the structure of Serampore Court compound heritage canteen. The only downside of anything built on an old structure is that it requires extensive maintenance which is clearly lacking at some places. The outside seating area was a little dusty and the path leading to the restaurant was not well lit. However, once inside the restaurant the atmosphere is just perfect for a family dinner or spending some quality time with old friends. The old style decor compliments the place and the lighting gives a more heritage feeling. The restaurant serves a simple Bengali menu which mainly focuses on different types of fishes. Pocket pinch at this place is ₹400-600 per couple if you don't order something fancy. Food quantity was standard. It tasted just perfect and overall our evening went just fine. I will highly recommend this place for lunch if you want perfect Bengali dishes. I am sure you won't be...
