It’s honestly disheartening to write this review. Having been a loyal customer for over two decades, I never imagined I’d see Mathsya drop to this level. The quality, the service, and the hospitality — everything that once made this place special — have all declined with time. It’s simply not our Mathsya anymore. What pains me most is the lack of respect and warmth from the staff. The ones allotting tables seem indifferent, and the serving staff carry a visibly poor attitude. The sambhar — once the pride of the meal — has lost its charm completely.

The efficiency that Mathsya was once famous for, especially in managing crowds and ensuring timely service, is nowhere to be found today. If you’re seated in the mini halls (not the main one), you can forget about getting a second serving of sambhar without chasing the staff 5–6 times. It’s chaotic, unorganized, and frustrating. I even saw a few guests arguing with the manager — something I’ve never witnessed before here.

What’s worse is the attitude of the senior staff — they still behave as if Mathsya is at the top of its game, completely ignoring the current reality. This arrogance reflects in the way they talk to customers.

I visited yesterday around 8:30 PM when the restaurant was more than half empty. I requested to be seated inside while waiting for my parents (who were 10–15 minutes away), since the lobby had no air-conditioning. The staff member at the counter refused bluntly, without a hint of courtesy or consideration.

As a family, we’ve already started visiting Mathsya far less frequently. And at this rate, I’m sure many others who’ve been regulars for years will eventually feel the same way too.

I know several hoteliers who take up such reviews thinking it's fake or a spam but be rest assured that it's actually coming from a customer himself. Request the owner / management to accept this fair and harsh reality than thinking about...

Yesterday Mathsya Egmore not only gave us tasty food but a bitter experience of 3 full hours. we 7 of us went around 1.30 pm but after ONE HOUR , around 2.45 pm only they gave us table !! (uncleaned). ( before that few others who came after us were called, we asked manager he dint help us) The order was taken at 3.00 pm , which was as per their wish. because they said except Birbal lunch all other lunch exhausted. ok without any other option we ordered 6 birbal lunch. It was served at around 3.20. But meantime we noticed that the south indian meals was served in the next table. We called manager , he did not come again. Ok we ended with Birbal lunch .. but alas!! No sweet in two plates and without one sidedish in one plate and no curd rice in one plate. We called the manager again he did not come. But ok, that was served after telling the server. Even then... at the time of asking the bill only we asked why no icecream is included in the Birbal Lunch when even for an ordinary lunch they include icecream in common hotels? The server told it is there for Birbal lunch and then he went inside to bring.. We got wild and again called the manager for the N'th time but he dint even respond. But the icecream and bill came simultaneously. We settled the bill , ignored the icecream and walked out. We went to Mathsya Hotel to have happy memories and better lunch instead of having our routine lunch brought from home but the experience was only bitter only. our get togather gave us fun and so we left the hotel with those pleasant memories... I am not very sure of the purpose of sharing this experience here but atleast i get a kind of satisfaction after...

It was a bad experience at Mathsya today. I went with family for dinner and ordered the following

Soup: Manchow and Tomato Starters: Nachos and Vegetable Manchurian Main course: Rasam Vada, Dosa, mini idly, and Golkonda Biryani

I'll come to service and atmosphere a little later.

Review of food

Soups were completely bland, it felt like we were having corn starch water with boiled vegetables

Nachos were supposed to come with white sauce, the quantity was so less that we had to scrape for the sauce. Upon speaking to manager, no heed was given, this is what it is was their response. Completely disappointed.

Veg Manchurian was good but quantity was less for the prices they serve it for.

Rasam Vada was the star of the show. Dosa, Idly was good, no complaints but nothing great to cover for the disappointing experience.

Golkonda rice was good but quantity again was not worth the prices they charge.

Coming to service:

Get ready to request repeatedly for extra chutney and sambar. Asking once will just not pull it off.

Mgmt has gone down hill, I already covered the experience with Nachos.

It was as if they were doing us a favor by just serving food.

Atmosphere:

We were 8 people, so they gave us a corner area, it was dark and gloomy. We requested for space in a comparatively better spot but it was denied (quite rudely)

All in all a very bad experience from Service to food and atmosphere, would not be going back over here again.

For those who cannot eat spicy food, this place is still not recommended as the quantity and service is terrible.

I did not click pictures as we were thoroughly disappointed.

Would rate this 1 because that's the lowest...

August 2025 report: Restaurant has free but limited parking for cars Parking is managed by one Hindi speaking guy who doesn’t even know to say “right or left” and uses sign language with Hindi words Visited this place for veg fine dining based on friends recommendation and the management chose to be kanjoos with staffing. Atleast have an English speaking North Indian to guide the parking. We had serious trouble finding parking space with Hindi only speaking staff. Definitely not a great start for “fine dining”. We tried raja raja chozhan dosa and rava onion dosa for main. Chozhan dosa is overrated , it just has tomato chutney and coconut chutney spread inside the dosa with capsicum and tomato bits. Not worth it. The sambar is really good but they are not keen on refilling . The tomato chutney was spoilt and coconut chutney was “cold” like it was just pulled out of refrigeration. They dint have basic courtesy to heat the cold coconut chutney . We already lost the good will of this place and we just wanted to finish it off and walk out We also ordered rasam vada which is good. We thoroughly enjoyed rasam vada and highly recommend it Service: below average service . We were reading menu to check what to order for sides and the order taker just removed the menu book while we were reading the menu. Pathetic . They dint fill water to the glasses as well Overall, an overhyped place. It might have been a legendary place earlier but as of August 2025, it’s not worth the visit I will not recommend this place to friends and family Kindly mark this review as HELPFUL to encourage just elaborate helpful reviews

I visited this restaurant with some of my colleagues during my last visit to Chennai on the month of March 2019 after Google returned with the name of this restaurant, Maythsya, when searched about good restaurants in Chennai near my location. It's located in a busy area. Although I didn't dislike the restaurant but I don't think it could love you too my expectations considering Google recommended it as the restaurant in Chennai where best quality Dosas are served. I think we had ordered butter rava masala dosa fit all of us and found it to be good but not exceptional. But I must cooked them for delivering the order real quick. It hardly took eight to ten minutes for them to deliver our order. The staff behavior was quite nice and they tried their best to make us feel comfortable in the surroundings. The restaurant is quite popular among the people of Chennai I believe. When we arrived at the restaurant not a single table was empty. There's usually a wait in there. But it's a good thing that they have provided a waiting area for the guests to sit and wait for their turn to get in. I found the prices of items to be ok and not that expensive. Regarding the restroom I would say that the restaurant management needs to work on its maintenance. Overall, I had a satisfactory experience visiting Mathsya restaurant in Chennai. Recommended.

Recently last Friday we crossed out one restaurant from our bucket list which was pending for a long time and it was one the best decisions made. This place is a Veg lovers paradise. Rasa Vadai and Curd vadai is the best dishes available here and oh my they were so hot literally burnt my mouth and throat. Aloo 55 spicy fry was super hot and spicy and made a great starter. Mysore Bonda was good. We had Butter Masala dosa and Mysore dosa and they were good. For dessert we had Gulab Jamun Cheese Cake and it was super Tasty (Must Try) Will we visit again? Definitely A big Yesss!!! We visited late evening around 9PM and the restaurant was packed. We managed to get a seat for two but there were lots of people who came as a family and had to wait for a long time so plan your visits early. Service needs to be improved. I understand the restaurant was packed and they had to take care lots of folks. We got lucky as we sat next to the bill counter and the staff in the counter assisted us.if not for him we wouldn’t have got our orders. Payments can be made through Cash/Card/UPI transactions
