I was happy to get a call letting me know they are opening vietnam bistro in canggu. As much as I love their pho, truth be told the drive to legion was a deterrent to visiting more often. So I indulged less in my Vietnamese food craving. So here is the good, not so good and great things about the new location.
So let get the not so good out of the way .. we sat in the corner table close to the street and it was warmer than I like and the speaker was right over my head so it was a little louder than I like. I think a fan and few more speakers will make a great improvement especially for that table.
The good….. the food is as good as in the original location and they even added few more items which I find endearing because it was already good and they added things like free range chicken dish that just makes the dining experience a joy. Not only has the selection been expanded but it’s even more healthier and tastier. I love this chicken because while it’s not overly meaty like the boilers I am use to in the states and even here in Bali which is meaty. But you know you are eating growth hormones and antibiotics filled meat. Instead I was treated to chewy chicken meat with texture and taste which I know is wholesome and nutritious. The price is the same as the legion location which by canggu standard is 25% less than all other comparable restaurants nearby while the overall food quality is at least 50% better.
The great….. great food selection, taste, value, in even nicer setting. The truth is the legion location was a food tasting journey where I liked that the decorations left only the food as the only factor in deciding if it was a place worth dining. Yes, it is a bit …. but Vietnam bistro canggu brought all the great food, value and wrapped it in a tasteful interior which made me wanted to linger long after I was full and slipping into food coma. The lighting was warm and the wood tones was inviting me to try the Vietnam coffee and the Plan desert.
As I look at the mural of miss hanh (chef) in a boat clutching water Lillies it occurred to me, not only was the mural better but the mural represented all that was better about this place in canggu. They kept the same ingredient that made Vietnam bistro a place worth driving an hour to eat but improved in it an unexpected and delightful way. Well done ! Well done …. Now I recede into my food coma joyful.
I went back again recently…. Not sure what happened but not the same as...
Read moreThis review is coming from a Nguyen who is a hardcore Vietnamese foodie…this is the best viet food I’ve had outside of vietnam—and is as authentic or more than the places in vietnam. 🇻🇳❤️🔥🥢
I am absolutely shocked to find this in Bali! I have travelled to 35+ countries and spent extensive time in Vietnam, and I always must try the food in various countries, hoping to find food as delicious as what my bà (grandma) cooked.
Mama Hanh makes amazing food, every dish with love. I have tried 6 dishes now and felt she made them perfectly.
It feels as if she took the best dishes from all over vietnam, made them as authentically + delicious as possible, and put it all into one menu.
The owner is a beautiful and kind Vietnamese woman with powerful cooking abilities. The service was extremely quick and pleasant, much exceeding my expectations. The restaurant was spotless and peaceful, filled with many vietnamese people. Prices are fair to cheap, especially given the quality of real ingredients used.
I brought with me a friend who says Vietnamese food is plain, he has tried it many times and simply doesn’t like it—he says this restaurant completely changed what he thought of Vietnamese food forever and that he loves it now!
This is the only vietnamese restaurant in Bali I have enjoyed (which I was very sad about), and after being here for 1 year, this food took me home!
Thank you mama hanh 🙏🏼✨

메뉴를 주문할 때 분명히 Pho No.2 bo tai 하나, Goi Coun(fresh spring roll) 하나를 주문했습니다.
Worst Experience of Traveling to Indonesia
I don't understand why the reviews here are good. Is it a new type of racism and a way to increase sales? It was tasteless and uncomfortable.
My friend and I stopped by the restaurant in the evening because we wanted to eat hot soup, and the outside staff kindly guided us to our visit. When we ordered the menu, we definitely ordered one Pho(Vietnamese noodle soup) No.2 bo tai and one fresh spring roll (Goi Coun). The staff also checked the order again.
When the food came out, two pho and one spring roll came out, so we said we didn't order one pho. Until then, I thought another table dish came out together, but the staff who checked the menu came over and said with an annoyed face, "Didn't you say okay when I said it was pho 2 earlier? I can't cancel this, so you have to pay it." I was speechless in such a sudden and ridiculous situation.
We already had dinner and wanted to eat hot soup as a late-night snack, so we came in to eat a simple meal, so we were full to eat one pho per person, but I thought she would get in trouble with her boss, so we were going to say okay, but suddenly she took the pho back to the kitchen, so we thought she would cancel it. But she took the food and suddenly wrapped it up without explanation and said you have to pay this as well when you pay the bill.
I was really pissed off at her dogmatic and rude attitude of saying that it was my fault that she mistook pho number 2 for two pho.
Even if she packed the rice noodles, we couldn't eat it because the noodles were swollen, and we were already full. In the end, we couldn't even eat and threw away the food.
Because we checked the order together, we had same responsibility. Why am I the only one who should victim? I wish she had been kind to me and said, "I think there was a miss communication. Can you pay for food you haven't even eaten?" Should I endure this rude attitude while paying for food I haven't eaten? The 75,000 rupiah has made my day worst. The restaurant got angry at the customer and was paid for the food, but no damage was done. After I made the payment that she was kind again.
If I had a delicious meal, maybe I forgave that but it was not delicious. The taste of soup was fishy, and the spring roll was tough and tasteless even though it contained shrimp which is my favorite.
English is not my first language. But I have experience working and living abroad, so I understand English enough.
I even thought it was racist, because she treated me like I would have misunderstood I was a foreigner. I just let it go because I didn't want to fight, but it was one of the worst moments of my trip...
